Vestal, N.Y. - Stony Brook enters the America East Tournament as the no. 6 seed and will travel to Binghamton to take on the no. 3 seeded Bearcats in the conference quarterfinals on Saturday at 6 p.m.
Scouting Binghamton
The Bearcats secured the third seed with a 3-4 conference record. After opening America East play with consecutive wins over Hartford and New Hampshire, they stumbled to a 1-4 record over their last five outings. Their lone win came against Stony Brook on Nov. 1. The game was tied 1-1 but Binghamton used a goal early in the second have to reclaim the lead, then pulled away late with three goals in the game’s final 10 minutes to post a 5-1 win. Despite the five-goal explosion against the Seawolves, Binghamton still ranks seventh in the America East with just 14 goals in 18 contests. Steve Celeste, Luca Bottoni and Alex Varkatzas lead the squad with two goals.
All-Time Series
Stony Brook is 11-22-3 all-time against the Bearcats. The stats indicate the team’s first meeting was closer than the result. Shots at halftime were 8-7 in favor of Binghamton and ended 20-15 for the Bearcats. Stony Brook created a lot of offense in the game, receiving a goal from junior Alejandro Fritz (Budapest, Hungary) and placing five of their 15 shots on target. The last time the two sides met in the America East Tournament was in 2012. The Seawolves prevailed in an overtime thriller, 5-4.
Quarterfinal Success
The Seawolves have fared well in the America East quarterfinals, winning four of the five quarterfinal matches they have played in, including their last three. The last time they lost in the America East first round was back in 2006 when they were upended by New Hampshire.
