Charlotte, N.C. -
For a second straight day at the 49er Classic, the Stony Brook softball team split a pair of games, beating Liberty, 3-1, before falling against Georgetown, 6-0.
Head Coach Megan Bryant's Reaction
"It was a terrific comeback in game one. Shayla really stepped up with the bases loaded. We pitched well and played solid defense."
Game One
Down 1-0 to Liberty entering the top of the seventh, the Seawolves (2-7) put a three-spot on the board on the strength of a three-run triple from junior Shayla Giosia (Runnemede, N.J.)
With the bases loaded and two out, Giosia drilled a 1-2 pitch to right center, driving in seniors Jessica Combs (Hammonton, N.J.) and Olivia Mintun (Neoga, Ill.) and sophomore Kellie Reynolds (Paso Robles, Calif.).
Sophomore Jane Sallen (Fort Worth, Fla.) was outstanding against the Flames, throwing six innings and allowing only one run.
Sallen ran into trouble in the bottom of the seventh, allowing back-to-back singles. But junior Allison Cukrov (Irvine, Calif.) struck out Grace Nordan, retired Blair Lawrence and got Kelby Allen to pop up to end the game and earn her first save of the season.
Game Two
Georgetown's Megan Hyson, who shut out Stony Brook yesterday, threw another complete-game shutout and no-hit the Seawolves.
Hyson allowed only two base runners, hitting Mintun and walking Combs.
The game was scoreless for five innings before Alexandria Anttila hit a grand slam in the top of the sixth. The Hoyas added two more runs in the seventh.
