San Luis Obispo, Calif. -
Junior Allison Cukrov (Irvine, Calif.) threw a complete game to earn her third victory of the season as the Stony Brook softball team split a pair of games on day one of the Mustang Classic.
The Seawolves held on to beat Sacramento State, 2-1, but fell to the hosts of the tournament, Cal Poly, 7-0, in the nightcap
Head CoachMegan Bryant'sReaction
"Game one was a solid performance for us and a good way to start the tournament. Game two was a different story as we didn't play well and make any adjustments against a very good pitcher."
Game One Recap
Staked to a 2-0 lead, Cukrov cruised through six innings, allowing only two hits. In the top of the seventh, Sacramento State had first and second and none out. Paris Prado bunted the ball to Cukrov, who threw the ball away, allowing a runner to score.
But with first and third and none out, Cukrov slammed the door on the Hornets. She got Yesenia Alcala to pop up, struck out Paige Castro and induced Alexa Chattleton to pop up to short to end the game.
Stony Brook scored early, pushing across runs in the first and second. With one out, senior Olivia Mintun (Neoga, Ill.) singled and advanced to third on junior Shayla Giosia's (Runnemede, N.J.) double to left. Junior Bria Green (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) followed with RBI ground out.
Freshman Abi Lund (Lincoln, Calif.) led off the second with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice from senior Nicole Schieferstein (Seaford, N.Y.). Senior Jessica Combs (Hammonton, N.J.) grounder to second was thrown away, allowing Lund to score.
Cukrov finished with six strikeouts.
Game Two Recap
Cal Poly's Sierra Hyland threw a one-hitter against Stony Brook, pitching to only two batters above the minimum. Mintun, whose bunt single broke up the no-hitter in the fourth, reached third before the Seawolves were retired.
The game was scoreless after two and a half innings. The Mustangs scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning, helped by two-run triple from Emily Ceccacci.
Ceccacci added an RBI single in the fourth and sixth inning.
