Stony Brook, N.Y. – Senior middle blocker Taylor Gillie of the Stony Brook volleyball team has been named America East Player of the Week, and junior setter Nicole Vogel has been chosen as Setter of the Week, league officials announced Monday afternoon. The duo led Stony Brook to a 3-0 weekend with wins over Kennesaw State, Western Michigan and St. Francis-Brooklyn and first-place finish in the Seawolves Invite Presented by Islandia Marriott Long Island.
Gillie put together arguably the best weekend of her collegiate career and was selected the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. The Fort Wayne, Ind., product averaged a conference-best 1.55 stuffs per stanza to go along with 2.55 kills per set and .323 hitting. Gillie put the team on her back in a win over Western Michigan, which entered the weekend ranked in RichKern.com’s top 75, becoming the first Seawolf since Evann Slaughter in 2011 to record double-digit blocks in a match with a personal-record 10 stuffs. She also tied for a match high with 14 kills for her first double-double of the season.
Vogel, who earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team, paced the conference with 10.55 assists per set and was second on the team in digs per frame at 2.91. She recorded double-doubles against Kennesaw State (35 assists, 12 digs) and Western Michigan (48 assists, 12 digs). Vogel, who hails from Costa Mesa, Calif., guided the Stony Brook offense to its top hitting percentage of the season (.368 vs. Kennesaw State).
Vogel and Gillie will look to help the Seawolves continue their momentum when conference play begins Friday at Hartford. Opening serve is slated for 6 p.m.
