Springfield, Mass. -
Senior Jameel Warney (Plainfield, N.J.) of the Stony Brook men's basketball team has been named as one of 20 players up for the 2016 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award, the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced Tuesday.
The annual honor, named for Hall of Famer and former Utah Jazz Karl Malone, recognizes the top power forward in men’s college basketball.
Warney, the two-time reigning America East Player of the Year, led Division I in double-doubles (24) and total rebounds (409) last season. He averaged 16.4 points and 11.7 rebounds per game, leading the conference in both categories.
Warney set a Division I program record with 575 points in 2014-15, reaching double figures in 32 of 35 games. He is 198 rebounds shy of breaking Tommy Brenton's school record of 1,118 and 133 points away topping Bryan Dougher's Division I program record of 1,609.
Warney is the program's all-time leader in blocks (177) and tenth in assists (168) at the Division I level.
By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2016 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award will be narrowed to just 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Mr. Malone and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee.
“In terms of power forwards who have had a significant impact on the game of basketball, Karl Malone is at the top of the list,” said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame.
