Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook men’s soccer team (3-4-1) opens conference play on Saturday, Oct. 3, vs. Albany (5-3-1) at 7 p.m. The first 150 in attendance will receive a white Stony Brook soccer t-shirt as part of the “White Out” theme.
Scouting Albany
The Great Danes will have revenge on their minds when they visit LaValle Stadium Saturday night. Stony Brook defeated Albany last season 3-2 behind a winning goal from Martin Giordano (Weston, Fla.). Stony Brook has won its last three meetings with Albany and is unbeaten against its Suny-rival in its last eight. If the Seawolves are to make it four in a row, they will have to find a way to slow down Afonso Pinheiro, the conference leader in goals (7) and points (14). Pinheiro scored twice on Tuesday to lead the Great Danes to a 3-0 win over Hartwick. Leo Melgar is their next best scoring option, sitting at nine points on four goals and an assist. Pedro Espindola is tied with Stony Brook’s Alejandro Fritz (Budapest, Hungary) and UMBC’s Michael Scott for the conference lead in assists with four.
Erdei’s Streak
It took sophomore Vince Erdei (Budapest, Hungary) 24 games to net his first collegiate goal, but his goal vs. Marist seems to have broke the schneid. Erdei has scored the Seawolves last three goals, all which have come in the last three games.
Fritz Continues to Assist
Senior midfielder Alejandro Fritz (Budapest, Hungary) regained the conference lead in assists with his fourth of the season vs. Buffalo. He is only two assists shy of his career-high, which he set as a freshman in 2012. He is tied-for-6th on the school’s all-time career assist list.
