Stony Brook chosen as America East preseason favorite

Oct. 22, 2015

Boston, Mass. - For a second straight season, the Stony Brook men's basketball team was chosen as the preseason favorite in America East, the conference announced Thursday. Senior Jameel Warney (Plainfield, N.J.) was named preseason all-conference for a second straight season.

The Seawolves received seven first-place votes and 63 points overall. Albany, picked second, received two first place votes and 55 points. Vermont (49), New Hampshire (47), Binghamton (32), Hartford (24), UMBC (23), UMass Lowell (19) and Maine (12) rounded out the list. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.

After being picked fourth in the 2009-10 preseason poll, Stony Brook has been chosen no lower than second in each of the last six seasons.

Warney, the two-time America East Player of the Year, led the Seawolves in scoring (16.4), rebounding (11.7) and blocks (2.0), becoming the first player since Bucknell's Mike Muscala in 2012-13 to lead a conference in all three categories.

He led Division I in double-doubles (24) and total rebounds (409) and was one of 17 players to average a double-double last season.

Stony Brook has featured a preseason all-conference selection in each of the last five seasons.

Warney is joined on the preseason all-conference team by Albany's Peter Hooley and Evan Singletary, New Hampshire's Tanner Leissner and Vermont's Ethan O'Day.

Stony Brook returns all five starters from a squad that won 23 games and advanced to the postseason for a fourth straight season. The Seawolves are one of only six mid-majors to win at least 22 games in each of the last four seasons.

Season tickets are on sale now. Mini-plans go on sale on Monday, October 26 and individual tickets are go on sale on Monday, November 2.  For more information, please call (631) 632-WOLF
