Live Stats | Live Video

Baltimore, Md. - The Stony Brook men’s soccer team (7-6-3, 3-2-1 AE), unbeaten in four straight and winners of three in a row, heads to Baltimore on Wednesday, Nov. 4, seeking a regular-season title. Standing in its way is three-time defending champion UMBC (9-5-3, 2-2-2 AE). Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Scouting UMBC

The Retrievers, a perennial power in the America East, are searching for the form that helped them make a run to the NCAA College Cup Semifinals last season. With a 2-2-2 conference record, they currently sit in sixth place in the conference; however, they did clinch a playoff spot in their last game, winning at UMass Lowell, 1-0. The Retrievers enjoyed tremendous success early in the season, posting a 7-3-1 record outside of league play. They are led by Virginia transfer Darius Madison and his team-leading six goals and three assists. Senior Michael Scott is tied for the conference lead with six assists to go along with three goals. UMBC is led in the back by goalkeeper Billy Heavner. Heavner and the UMBC defense is tied with New Hampshire with a league-low mark of .94 goals against per game.

Seawolves Sweep Weekly Awards

The Stony Brook men’s soccer team (7-6-3, 3-2-1 AE) swept the conference awards after its 2-0 week. Sophomore Vince Erdei (Budapest, Hungary) was named the America East Player of the Week, scoring a combined three goals in Stony Brook’s two wins over No. 17 Hofstra and Binghamton. Freshman Serge Gamwanya (Kinshasa, Congo) garnered America East Rookie of the Week honors, finishing the week with a goal and two assists. After his three goal week, Erdei ranks second in the conference with eight goals and 20 points. Gamwanya leads all freshmen in the conference with 11 points on three goals and five assists.

Getting Defensive

The Seawolves have allowed just one goal over the last 323:52 minutes of action. They are 7-0-3 when allowing one goal or less and 0-5 when allowing two or more goals.

Playoff Scenario

The good news for the Seawolves is they are assured to be one of the six teams represented in the playoffs. Where they will be seeded and who they will play is still very much in the air. Stony Brook can finish anywhere from the one seed to the six seed with just one game to play, depending on other results in the conference. If Stony Brook defeats UMBC Wednesday night and Albany and New Hampshire do not win, they will be crowned regular-season champs.
