Seawolves drop series opener at Lousiana-Lafayette 7-3

Box Score Feb. 20, 2015

Final Stats

Lafayette, La. - The Seawolves (1-3) raced to a 3-0 lead through four and a half innings but couldn't hang on as they fell to Louisiana-Lafayette (3-2) 7-3 Friday night.

Senk's Reaction

"I am proud of our effort tonight, especially the way we jumped out to an early lead," said head coach Matt Senk. "Lafayette proved why it's such a good team with the way it swung the bat in the middle innings and its bullpen shut the door. We did a lot of good things tonight which leaves me excited for tomorrow's doubleheader."

Turning Point

Starting pitcher Tyler Honahan (Parker, Colo.) was cruising along until he ran into trouble in the fifth inning. He was an out away from escaping the jam, but with runners on 1st and 2nd, Stefan Trosclair doubled in two runs. They were the first runs allowed by Honahan in 13.2 innings this season. Senk would pull Honahan in favor of junior Chad Lee (San Dimas, Calif.), but the righty allowed an inherited runner to score in the fifth and three more to score in the sixth.

Notes

  • Sophomore Casey Baker's (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) rbi triple staked the Seawolves to a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
  • Stony Brook would push the lead to 3-0 behind an rbi groundout from junior Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y.) and an rbi single from senior Robert Chavarria (Garden Grove, Calif.) in the fifth inning.
  • Honahan allowed three runs on three hits and three walks in 4.2 innings of work.
  • Junior Nick Brass (Shirley, N.Y.) and freshman Cole Creighton (Levittown, Pa.) pitched scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
  • The Seawolves were outhit 7-5.
