Box Score Feb. 21, 2015

Game One Box | Game Two Box

Lafayette, La. - Redshirt sophomore Dan Zamora (La Puente, Calif.) stifled the Louisiana-Lafayette bats in game one of Saturday's doubleheader as the Seawolves downed the Ragin' Cajuns 4-1. The home team would respond in game two of the twinbill, scoring a late run to edge the Seawolves 2-1.

Senk's Reaction

"We had a terrific win in the first game led by Dan Zamora's fantastic outing," said head coach Matt Senk. "The second game was a great rubber match contest. It is disappointing to come up on the short end but we can leave here knowing that we definitely got better this weekend.  We will come home, work on some things and get ready for a tough-test against the Florida Gators next weekend."

Game One

The Seawolves utilized a "small ball" approach to jump out to a 4-0 lead through the first three innings. They scored three runs in the second inning on three hits and a Ragin’ Cajun error.

Junior Johnny Caputo (Toronto, Ontario) led off the frame with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on an infield single by freshman Andruw Gazzola (Coram, N.Y.). After Gazzola moved to second on a passed ball, sophomore Toby Handley (Whitby, Ontario) laid down a beautiful bunt down the first baseline to score Caputo and advance Gazzola to third. Freshman Bobby Honeyman (Massapequa, N.Y.) kept the rally alive with an rbi line drive single to center to make the score 2-0. He would proceed to steal second, move to third on a passed ball and come home when the Lafayette second baseman misplayed junior Jack Parenty’s (Wantagh, N.Y.) drag bunt.

Stony Brook tacked on a fourth run in the third inning, capitalizing on a pair of Ragin’ Cajun errors. Gazzola was the player to cross the plate after Handley reached base via a throwing error.

The four runs were more than enough for Zamora (1-0). The lefty went six innings, allowing one run on four hits and striking out seven. Freshman Teddy Rodliff (Quincy, Mass.) relieved Zamora, pitching the final three innings to nail down his first career save.

Game Two

The series finale was a classic pitching matchup. Junior Tim Knesnik (Milford, Pa.) went toe-to-toe with opposing starter, Greg Milhorn.

The Ragin’ Cajuns scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-out single. The Seawolves evened the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning when senior Robert Chavarria (Garden Grove, Calif.) singled in sophomore Jeremy Giles (Claremont, Calif.) who led off the inning with a double to left.

The Stony Brook bullpen kept Louisiana-Lafayette off the board until the bottom of the eighth when it took a 2-1 lead off another two-out single.

Knesnik went four innings, allowing one run on three hits. Junior Edwin Corniel (New York, N.Y.) received the loss despite allowing just one of the five batters he faced to reach base. The Seawolves were outhit 6-3 for the game.

Notes

  • In the twinbill, the Seawolves outhit Louisiana-Lafayette 12-11 and committed two errors to the Ragin Cajuns' three.
  • Zamora lowered his era to 1.64 this season. He has struck out 15 batters in just 11.0 innings.
