Seawolves to play two vs. CCSU in home opener Wednesday

The Seawolves (7-8) host Central Connecticut State (11-5) Wednesday in their home opener. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2.p.m. Stony Brook is 48-9-1 over the last three seasons on its home field, going 16-1 last season.

Scouting the Seawolves

  • The Seawolves have four starters hitting over .300 entering this weekend's series. Senior Bria Green (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) leads the way with a .429 average, followed by senior Shayla Giosia (.396), freshman Chelsea Evans (.333) and junior Alexandra Pisciotta (.326).
  • Pisciotta (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) is riding a nine-game hitting streak into the weekend, going 13-for-32 (.406) during the stretch.
  • The duo of Green (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) and Giosia is climbing up the Stony Brook all-time career home runs list. Green is fourth all-time in SBU career home runs with 29, while Giosia is sixth all-time with 23. Green's six homers this season lead the America East.
  • Stony Brook's offense has showcased impressive power. As a team, they have belted 18 home runs in 15 games to rank 27th in the NCAA in home runs per game (1.20).
  • Green won America East Player of the Week last week after going 7-for-8 with two home runs in two neutral site games against Morgan State and Mount St. Mary's. It was the fourth time in her career she has won the award.

Scouting the Blue Devils

The Blue Devils opened the season 6-0 and sit 11-5 through their first 16 games. Kat Malcolm leads the team in virtually all offensive categories, batting .396 with three home runs and 15 rbi. Evie Rentzel (.311) and Eileen Purcell (.308) are also off to strong starts. Laura Messina is one of the top pitchers in the country. She is 8-2 with a 0.60 era, the fourth best mark in the nation. She was ranked as the 8th best pitcher in the nation in the preseason by Fastpitch News and was placed on the USA Today Preseason Player of the Year Watch List.

Success against the NEC

The Seawolves are 11-1 in their last 12 meetings with teams from the NEC.
