Seawolves, Pioneers play to 0-0 draw

Aug. 31, 2015

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook men's soccer team (1-0-1) extended its shutout streak to 200 minutes on Monday in a scoreless draw at Sacred Heart. The Seawolves two clean sheets to open the season is just one shy of their total from 2014.

Anatol's Reaction

"I thought it was a pretty good performance overall," said head coach Ryan Anatol. "Defensively, we were very good to play 110 minutes and keep a shutout. Not only did we keep a shutout, but we really limited any quality chances. We are a little disappointed with the result. I thought we had chances to win the game, but just weren't quite sharp enough in the final third."

Highlights

  • Sophomore Thibault Duval had the match's first dangerous scoring opportunity. The play started with a diagonal ball from sophomore Danny Espinoza (East Meadow, N.Y.) that was challenged for by sophomore forward Vince Erdei (Budapest, Hungary). He went up for the header and collided with the goalkeeper, allowing the ball to fall to Duval, but his shot at the vacant goal was cleared off the line by a defender.
  • Erdei created another opportunity with a nice pass to senior Alejandro Fritz (Budapest, Hungary) late in the first half, but the midfielder's shot was pulled wide of target.
  • Erdei had a chance of his own midway through the second half when Duval lofted a ball onto his head, but he couldn't get high enough to get over the ball, looping it over the crossbar for a goal kick.
  • Senior Martin Giordano (Weston, Fla.) ran on the end of another Duval cross with two minutes left in regulation, but his header was straight at the keeper.
  • Giordano had the best chance in overtime when he slipped in behind the defense and received a pass from Duval, but the linesman interrupted his breakaway attempt to rule him offside.

Notes

  • Stony Brook was outshot 20-13 for the match, but had the higher quality scoring opportunities.
  • The Seawolves held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Redshirt junior Jason Orban (Manorville, N.Y.) made six saves for his second shutout of the season and the fourth of his career.
  • Erdei and Giordano tied for the team lead with three shots. Two of Erdei's were on frame, a team-high.
  • Espinoza, freshman Rickel Dixon (Sangre Grande, Trinidad), junior Tavares Thompson (Kingston, Jamaica) and junior Kofi Ramirez Osei-Tutu (Trondheim, Norway) played nearly the entire 110 minutes as the back four unit. Only Espinoza didn't go the distance, logging a total of 105 of 110 minutes.
