Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook men’s soccer team (1-2-1) will try to put an end to its two-game losing streak on Sunday when it welcomes Harvard (0-2-1) for a 5 p.m. kick.
Scouting Harvard
The Crimson have faced a grueling schedule to open its 2015 campaign. After a 1-0 loss to current No. 20 Loyola Marymount, they tied No. 23 SMU 2-2 before falling to UCONN, 2-1. Oliver White leads the team with two goals. Despite starting 0-3 in 2014, the Crimson posted an 11-4-2 record, only to be snubbed from an NCAA Tournament bid. Harvard and Stony Brook met last year with the Crimson prevailing 2-0.
Youth Movement
Ten of the 16 players to see game action this season are freshmen and sophomores, a promising sign that head coach Ryan Anatol and his staff have the program trending in the right direction. Six players from the freshmen class have seen the pitch, making it the most represented class in terms of game action. Four sophomores have seen time, rounded out by four juniors and two seniors. Freshmen Serge Gamwanya (Kinshasa, Congo) and Martieon Watson (Vessigny, Trinidad) own two of Stony Brook’s three goals.
Seeing Red
The Seawolves will be without freshmen Rickel Dixon (Sangre Grande, Trinidad) on Sunday. Dixon, who has started all four Stony Brook matches at center back for the Seawolves, was shown two yellow cards in a span of six minutes in Thursday’s match at Iona. A red card carries a one-game suspension.
