Stony Brook, N.Y. - A week after the Stony Brook men's tennis team opened its fall season with a home tournament, the women's team hosted its 10th annual Stony Brook Classic this weekend.
Junior Nadia Smergut (New York, N.Y.) and freshman Ester Chikvashvili (Melville, N.Y.) advanced to the finals of their respective draws before falling in straight sets.
Smergut lost 6-4, 6-1 to Olaya Inclan Solis of St. John's in the 'B' draw. Chikvashville won the second set against Delia Arranz, but fell 10-8 in the third of the 'D' draw.
Junior Louise Badoche (Paris, France) rallied after losing her first match to capture the 'D' singles consolation draw. She ousted Hofstra's Sarah Catherine Herndon, 8-6, in the finals.
Senior Becky Shtilkind (Brooklyn, N.Y.) lost to Navy's Catalina Rico, 8-5, in the 'C' singles final consolation draw.
Smergut and sophomore Yana Nikolaeva (Thornhill, Ontario) advanced to the 'A' doubles draw final before falling 6-3 to the St. John's duo of Solis and Natallia Vavulina.
The Seawolves will be back in action in two weeks at the Brown Invitational on September 25.
