Erdei's overtime goal leads Seawolves past Marist, 2-1

Sept. 16, 2015

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior Martin Giordano (Weston, Fla.) appreciated sophomore Vince Erdei's (Budapest, Hungary) assist on his first goal so much, he decided to return the favor, setting up Erdei for the game-winning goal in the second overtime to lift the Stony Brook men's soccer team (2-3-1) over Marist 2-1 on Wednesday night.

Anatol's Reaction

"Obviously, I am happy to get the result," said head coach Ryan Anatol. "It has been a few games now where I have sat here and said we played pretty well but didn't get a result, so to get the result today was good."

Highlights

  • Giordano waited just three minutes and seven seconds to put the Seawolves on the board, touching Erdei's feed over a defender and beating the keeper for his third goal of the season. The play was started when freshman Serge Gamwanya (Kinshasa, Congo) won a tackle in the midfield to ignite the counter attack.
  • Marist's Cameron Harr notched his third goal of the season in the 80th minute to tie the score 1-1. He took advantage of a failed clearing attempt by the Seawolves and chipped one over senior goalkeeper Jason Orban (Manorville, N.Y.).
  • Brian Coyt had a great look for Marist with just a minute remaining in regulation but his shot from the penalty spot area went wide of mark.
  • With the first overtime period winding down, sophomore Thibault Duval (Grace Hollogne, Belgium) took a stab at an acrobatic scorpion kick on a cross from Danny Espinoza (East Meadow, N.Y.). He nearly pulled off a goal of the year candidate, connecting well enough to put the attempt on frame, but it was kept out by Mark Rajovic's diving save.
  • Erdei tapped home the winner a minute and 37 seconds into the final overtime period. Senior midfielder Alejandro Fritz (Budapest, Hungary) started the play with a delicate through ball to Giordano. The midfielder then cut the ball to the far post, where it was received by a hustling Erdei.
Notes
  • Giordano, a second team All-America East performer a season ago, has already matched his point total from last year with three goals and two assists through just six games this season.
  • With his three-point night, Giordano moved into second place in the America East in points, one behind Leo Melgar from Albany for the conference lead.
  • Fritz took over the conference lead in assists with his third helper of the season.
  • The Seawolves took control of the match in the overtime periods, outshooting the Red Foxes 6-0 in the 11 + minutes of extra time.
  • The Seawolves ended the match with an 18-11 advantage in shots.
  • Orban made five saves to earn his second win of the season.
  • The Seawolves are 4-1-0 over the last two season when they score two or more goals.
