Conference Call
The Stony Brook volleyball team opens up America East play with a Friday night match at Pritchard Gymnasium against UMBC. The Seawolves are 14-10 against the Retrievers since UMBC joined America East in 2003 and have won three straight in the series.
Last Time Out
Stony Brook hit a season-high .379 in Tuesday night’s sweep of Fordham at Rose Hill Gym in the Bronx. The Seawolves hit .491 over the match’s first two sets to take control of the contest. Freshman Morgan Kath tallied 34 assists in the three-set win.
Scouting the Retrievers
UMBC is 6-8 on the year after dropping a five-set decision at home to La Salle Tuesday night. The Retrievers have dropped four straight, with the last two against La Salle and William & Mary being five-set defeats.
Maddie Schneider leads the Retrievers with 3.15 kills/set, while Krystal Williams has recorded a team-best .273 hitting percentage. Carola De jesus leads the team with 3.40 digs/set, while Marissa Duncan (0.89/set) leads the Retrievers on the block.
The Last Time We Met
Stony Brook took both matches from UMBC in 2014. The Seawolves took a four-set decision from the Retrievers at Pritchard Gymnasium Oct. 3 and swept UMBC in Baltimore Oct. 31.
Ace of Base
Senior Stephanie McFadden ranks fifth nationally with 0.60 aces/set. McFadden was named to the Seawolves Invite All-Tournament Team Saturday.
Boston Calling
The Seawolves garnered an America East weekly award in three of the season’s first four weeks. Morgan Kath was named Setter of the Week Aug. 31 and Rookie of the Week Monday, while McKyla Brooks earned Rookie of the Week honors Sept. 8.
The Freshmen
Freshman Morgan Kath leads America East in assists/set with 9.08 and is second nationally among freshmen with 545 total assists. McKyla Brooks is tops among conference freshmen with a .291 hitting percentage, good for second among all America East players.
