New Rochelle, N.Y. - The Stony Brook men’s soccer team (1-1-1) looks to get back in the win column on Wednesday when it takes on Iona (0-2-1) at 4:30 p.m. in New Rochelle.

Scouting Iona

The Gaels are still in search of their first win of the season, having lost their last two since an opening season draw vs. James Madison. In 2014, they finished 9-7-3, falling to Monmouth in the MAAC Semifinals. Iona is trying to replace last year’s leading scorer, Ignacio Maganto, who finished with 11 goals and five assists. The next closest pursuer, Marcos Nunez, had three goals. Nunez and Daniel Huerta are responsible for the Gaels’ goals this season. The Seawolves are 2-0 all-time vs. the Gaels, winning the last contest 1-0 in 2010.

Senior Leadership

Seniors Martin Giordano (Weston, Fla.) and Alejandro Fritz (Budapest, Hungary) teamed up for the Stony Brook goal in its 3-1 loss at No. 15 Louisville last Friday. The two seniors were named to the America East All-Conference second team in 2014 and are the two top active points leaders on the team. Giordano, Friday night’s goal scorer, leads the team with three points on a goal and an assist. For his career, he has 28 points on 10 goals and eight assists. Fritz, the assister on Giordano’s goal, is the active leader with 32 points on 11 goals and 10 assists.

Youth Movement

Ten of the 16 players to see game action this season are freshmen and sophomores, a promising sign that head coach Ryan Anatol and his staff have the program trending in the right direction. Six players from the freshmen class have seen the pitch, making it the most represented class in terms of game action. Four sophomores have seen time, rounded out by four juniors and two seniors.
