Columbia, Md. - In a gritty and gutsy match, the Stony Brook women's tennis team fell to Albany, 4-2, in the America East Championship final Sunday at the Wilde Lake Tennis Center.
The Seawolves took a 1-0 after doubles wins at the No. 1 and 3 spot. Sophomore Yana Nikolaeva (Thornhill, Ontario) and Elizabeth Tsvetkov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won 6-2 at the top spot.
Junior Nadia Smergut (New York, N.Y.) and senior Becky Shtilkind (Brooklyn, N.Y.) clinched the point with a 6-2 win at No. 3.
Albany won singles matches at No. 1, 3 and 5 to take a 3-1 lead, but Smergut won 6-2 in the third set over Dajana Ognjenovic to make it 3-2.
Shtilkind forced a third set against Isidora Pejovic, but she was outlasted 7-6 in the final set.
Stony Brook finished the season 10-7.
