Aug. 19, 2016 Final Stats
Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's soccer team opened its 2016 season with a 1-0 overtime loss to Bryant on Friday night.
Bryant's Remi Manna provided the game's lone goal with 1:35 remaining in the final overtime period to lift Bryant to the victory despite being outshot by the Seawolves 24-10.
Faherty Quote
"We had opportunities where we could have put our authority on the game and we didn't take advantage of it," said head coach Brendan Faherty. "We did a lot of good things and were able to get behind them quite a bit, but the object of the game is to score goals and we needed to be better in the final third."
Highlights
- The Seawolves started fast, generating the game's first scoring chance three minutes in. Senior Lindsay Hutchinson (Millersville, Pa.) found senior Raven Edwards (WEst Orange, N.J.) with a diagonal ball. The striker took a good first touch to goal but her attempt was saved by the toe of Bryant's goalkeeper, Kaylan Conrad. Sophomore Jordyn Klapper (Wantagh, N.Y.) pounced on the rebound, but her follow-up attempt was blocked.
- Edwards continued to cause problems to the Bryant defense. She turned the corner and cut back a ball for junior Sam Goodwin (Westbury, N.Y.) in the 37th minute, but the midfielder's firm strike was straight at Conrad.
- Less than a minute later sophomore Julie Johnstonbaugh (Neshanic Station, N.J.) raced by the Bulldog defense and squared a ball across goal that snuck by Conrad, but it was deflected over the crossbar by a Bryant defender.
- Edwards had the two best scoring opportunities in the second half. The first came in the 52nd minute when she received a seam pass from junior Christen Cahill (Pembroke, Mass.) but she dragged her left-footed attempt just wide of goal.
- Edwards nearly found the game-winner in the 84th minute when she cut in front of a Bryant defender, but her shot from close range was once again turned aside.
- Manna's winner was the result of a nice pass from Alex Spangler. The forward chested the ball in stride and chipped Stony Brook goalkeeper Shannon Robinson (Stony Point, N.Y.).
Notes
- Bryant's goal was its first shot attempt of the overtime sessions.
- Stony Brook forced Conrad into eight stops while Robinson, making her first career start, finished with two saves.
- Cahill led Stony Brook with five shots, while Hutchinson and Edwards paced the team with two shots on goal.
- The Seawolves outshot Bryant 13-4 over the game's final 63 minutes.
- Senior Priscilla Wiggins (Fresno, Calif.) logged the entire 108 + minutes in midfield in defeat.
