Stony Brook travels to Hofstra on Tuesday for first road contest of 2017-18 season

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Stony Brook women's basketball hits the road for the first time in 2017-18 on Tuesday, traveling to Hofstra for a non-conference contest at 7 p.m.
 
Last Time Out
  • Stony Brook women's basketball began the 2017-18 season in impressive fashion on Saturday, Nov. 10 at Island Federal Credit Union Arena, topping Manhattan, 74-59, in non-conference action to improve to 1-0.
  • Shania Johnson (Frederick, M.D.) paced the Seawolves' offense, recording 20 points, seven assists and five rebounds in the win. The junior shot 8-for-15 from the floor (3-for-8 from 3-point range).
  • Jerell Matthews (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in with 13 points and eight rebounds, shooting 5-for-12 from the floor.
  • Aaliyah Worley (Philadelphia, Pa.) added nine points of her own, while India Pagan (New London, Conn.) recorded eight points and four rebounds.
  • The Seawolves shot 55.1 percent (27-49) from the floor on the night, going 5-for-18 from beyond the arc. The program assisted on 17 of 29 baskets.
Scouting Hofstra
  • Hofstra is 1-0 so far this season, knocking off UMBC, 71-55, in its opener on Sunday, Nov. 12. The Pride posted a 13-18 overall record in 2016-17.
  • Ashuane Durant returns for her senior season, after pacing Hofstra's offense (16.0 points, 10.6 rebounds) in 2016-17. Durant was named to the Preseason All-CAA First Team prior to the start of the 2017-18 campaign, and scored a team-high 18 points in the Pride's season opener vs. UMBC.
  • E'Lexus Davis chipped in with 17 points and nine assists in the win over UMBC.

  • Stony Brook is 1-6 all-time vs. Hofstra in the Division I era. The Seawolves fell vs. the Pride, 67-64, the last time the two programs met on Nov. 14, 2016.
 Head Coach Caroline McCombs
  • Caroline McCombs completed her third season as the head coach of the Stony Brook women's basketball team in 2016-17, as the Seawolves head coach has risen among the winningest coaches in Stony Brook's Division I era.
  • With a victory over Manhattan in the 2017-18 home opener, McCombs has now won 47 games on Long Island – which ranks second among Stony Brook coaches in the Division I era. McCombs guided the Seawolves' program to 17 wins in 2014-15, 17 victories in 2015-16, and 12 wins in 2016-17.
Shania Johnson
  • Johnson recorded a team-high 20 points, seven assists and five rebounds in the win over Manhattan. The transfer from Monroe Community College shot 8-for-15 from the floor (3-for-8 from 3-point range). Johnson scored six of the Seawolves' first nine points over the first 3:04 of action. 
Jerell Matthews
  • Matthews poured in 13 points for Stony Brook vs. Manhattan, which ties a career high for the junior. The guard shot 5-of-12 for the night, adding a career-high eight rebounds in 36 minutes. 
Giolibeth Perez
  • The sophomore returns for Stony Brook after playing in all 30 games last season, averaging 3.2 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. Perez had six points and one assist in the Seawolves' 2017-18 season opener.
Aaliyah Worley
  • The Seawolves' lone senior played in 29 games last year, starting 18 times. Worley recorded 4.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game in 2016-17. Worley scored nine points in Stony Brook's 2017-18 opener.
Ayshia Baker
  • Baker returns for her junior season with the Seawolves, after leading the program in blocks (19) last year. Baker played in 23 games off the bench for the Seawolves in 2016-17. 
Preseason Poll
  • The Seawolves have been selected to finish No. 8 in the 2017-18 America East Women's Basketball Coaches' Poll, as announced by the conference on Oct. 19, 2017. Stony Brook received 16 total votes in the poll. New Hampshire was voted as the unanimous league favorite, garnering 64 total votes. 
Defensive Success
  • The Seawolves featured a top-40 scoring defense in 2016-17, as Stony Brook stifled opponents from beyond the arc, allowing the third-fewest three-pointers in the nation. Stony Brook held 20 of 30 opponents to 60 points or less during the campaign.
2016-17
  • Stony Brook went 12-18 last season, falling to New Hampshire, 58-49, in the first round of the America East Tournament.

  • Following the contest at Hofstra, the Seawolves travel to Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday, Feb. 19 for a 2 p.m. non-conference contest.
