STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook men's lacrosse team remains on the road this weekend, traveling to Hartford for its second America East Conference game of the season. The Seawolves are still receiving votes in both polls this season as they look to bounce back after falling at No. 7 Hofstra earlier this week. Hartford enters the matchup at 3-4 on the year, winning three of its last four outings.
Seawolves Notes
- Alex Corpolongo set a new career high with five goals in the conference opener against UMBC. He leads the team with 19 goals and 24 points and has scored in 25 straight games.
- Tom Haun notched his fifth multi-point game of the season with two goals at No. 7 Hofstra. He has had a point in every game this season.
- Ryan Bitzer leads the team with 16 assists, adding four to go along with two goals at No. 7 Hofstra. He has had at least one point in 26 of the last 27 games.
- The Seawolves started the season 4-0, marking the best start in program history. They took down then-No. 10 Brown 25-17, marking just the second win over a top-10 team in program history.
- Stony Brook's win over Fairfield marked the 200th of head coach Jim Nagle's 23-year career. Nagle is in his sixth season at Stony Brook, notching 12-plus wins in each of the last two seasons.
Scouting Hartford
Hartford enters its conference opener with a 3-4 overall record this season. The Hawks dropped their first three games of the season before topping Jacksonville, 15-3, for their first win. Hartford is coming off of a 9-3 home win over Marist Tuesday afternoon. Four fourth-quarter goals, two from Connor Van Duzer, sealed the victory for the Hawks.
Justin Huggins leads the defending America East Champions with 17 goals and 22 points on the year. Griffin Feiner also adds 22 points by way of 12 goals and 10 assists. Dylan Protesto is in on the face-off for the Hawks and his .603 success rate ranks 13
th in the nation. He also sits a sixth in the country, averaging 8.14 ground balls per game. Ryan Vanderford has been in goal for Hartford as of late, boasting a 3-1 record, as well as a 6.75 GAA and .585 save percentage.
Series Info
Stony Brook leads the all-time series with the Hawks 23-7. The two teams first met in 1990, when the Seawolves took an 18-9 win at home. Stony Brook claimed the first nine games in the series and most recently has taken the last five meetings. The Seawolves are 11-3 all-time against the Hawks in West Hartford, Connecticut. Stony Brook knocked off the Hawks 16-8 at home last season.
Ryan Bitzer (Riverhead, N.Y.) sparked a nine-goal scoring spree that spanned the third and fourth quarters after a close first half to put the game in the Seawolves' favor.
Last Time Out
The Seawolves traveled to nearby Hofstra to take on the No. 7 Pride in the midweek. Stony Brook was unable to get by its third top-10 opponent of the season, falling 11-9 despite a late comeback. After a 2-2 first quarter, Hofstra outscored the Seawolves 5-1 in the second quarter to take momentum and the lead into the break. Stony Brook outscored Hofstra 5-1 in the fourth quarter, but was unable to overcome the difference. Bitzer was the catalyst in the game for the Seawolves, scoring two goals and assisting four more. He got Stony Brook on the board first in the game and sparked the late scoring spree.
Scoring Streak
Senior
Alex Corpolongo (Purdys, N.Y.) boasts the second longest active scoring streak in the nation, having put away a goal in each of the last 25 games. The streak began at the end of the 2015 regular season when the Seawolves topped Hartford 9-8 in overtime. His 25-game streak with a point ranks 17
th in the nation.
Senior Leaders
Corpolongo and Bitzer have stepped up big for the Seawolves this season. Corpolongo leads the team in scoring (19), while Bitzer has taken on the role of set-up man, leading the way with 16 assists on the year. Bitzer is coming off of a six-point performance at No. 7 Hofstra where he got the Seawolves going in the game and sparked a late comeback. Corpolongo has been the most consistent contributor for the Seawolves this season and notched a new career best with five goals against UMBC. Immediate Impact
The Seawolves have seen an immediate impact from their freshman class early in the year.
Harrison Matsuoka (Calgary, Alberta, Canada),
Tom Haun (Sachem, N.Y.),
Wayne White (Huntington, N.Y.),
Connor Grippe (Setauket, N.Y.) and
Cory VanGinhoven (Fort Mill, N.C.) lead the newcomers early on as each has played in every game so far this season. The group has combined for 38 of the team's 82 goals to far this year, and also tallied 16 assists, 25 ground balls and six caused turnovers.
VanGinhoven was named America East Rookie of the Week after putting away seven goals against then-No. 10 Brown, which is the third-most goals scored in a game by a Stony Brook player. He is second on the team with 14 goals on the year. Haun has also been an impressive force on offense for the Seawolves after starting the year with four goals against Sacred Heart. He is third on the team with 20 points after notching his fifth multi-point game of the season.
