Kylie Ohlmiller named Tewaaraton Award finalist

WASHINGTON – Stony Brook women's lacrosse junior Kylie Ohlmiller (Islip, N.Y.) has been selected as one of the five finalists for the Tewaaraton Award, given to the top player in collegiate lacrosse.

Ohlmiller enters the NCAA tournament with 70 goals and 75 assists, as her 145 points are four away from breaking the Division I single-season record set by Maryland's Jen Adams in 2001. The junior attack is the first player in Division I history with 70 goals and 70 assists in a season and needs 10 assists to break the Division I single-season assists record set by Northwestern's Hannah Nielsen in 2009. The Islip native ranks one assist shy of fifth on the Division I career list with 166 in just 60 games.

Ohlmiller, who was a Tewaaraton nominee and IWLCA All-American both as a freshman in 2015 and as a sophomore in 2016, becomes the first female Tewaaraton finalist from Stony Brook and the America East Conference.

"What a tremendous honor - I could not be more proud of Kylie," said Stony Brook head women's lacrosse coach Joe Spallina. "She is someone that works relentlessly on her craft and is one of the most incredibly talented lacrosse players I have ever been around. Kylie is off the charts in every aspect of the sport, but in addition, is an all-world teammate and in true superstar form makes the players around her better."

Stony Brook enters the NCAA tournament as the No. 8 national seed with an 18-1 record. The Seawolves feature the nation's top scoring defense (6.95) and lead the nation in scoring margin (9.26), assists per game (10.53) and points per game (24.76) while ranking third in scoring offense (16.21). Stony Brook has tallied seven victories over teams in the top 20 in RPI and eight over the NCAA tournament field.

The 2017 Tewaaraton will be awarded at a ceremony in Washington, Thursday, June 1.

The Seawolves return to action Friday when they host Bryant at 4:30 p.m. at LaValle Stadium to begin the NCAA tournament.
