PORTLAND, M.E. – Stony Brook women's basketball earned three individual America East All-Conference awards, as announced at the conference banquet on Friday night. Junior
Shania Johnson (Frederick, M.D) has been named to the All-Conference First Team, junior
Jerell Matthews (Chicago, Ill.) earned All-Conference Third Team honors, and freshman
McKenzie Bushee (Pittsburgh, PA) has earned All-Conference Rookie Team honors.
Johnson led the Seawolves' offense during the 2017-18 regular season, recording 15.7 points (No. 5 in America East), 5.6 assists and 4.2 rebounds per contest. The guard has drained 90 3-point field goals so far for the Seawolves, which ranks No. 1 in the America East and No. 15 nationally. Johnson's 90 3-pointers made so far this year sets a new single-season program record, surpassing Julie Szabo's total of 76 shots from distance in 1999-2000. The junior has scored double-digit point totals in 23 of 29 games this year.
Matthews has posted 14.2 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game in 2017-18, tallying double-digit point totals in 22 of 29 contests. The junior shot 44.7 percent from the floor during the regular season (No. 5 in America East), shooting a conference-best 38.6 percent from 3-point range.
Bushee added 4.7 points and 4.4 rebounds per contest for Stony Brook, starting in 14 total contests. The freshman forward shot 44.1 percent from the field, posting 5.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game in America East action.
The Seawolves have now had eight all-conference selections in the four years under head coach
Caroline McCombs. Sabre Proctor was selected to the all-conference first team in 2014-15, while
Kori Bayne-Walker made the second team and Brittany Snow landed on the third team. In 2015-16, Snow improved to earn second-team recognition, while Bayne-Walker was a second-team selection in 2016-17.
Stony Brook women's basketball is back in action on Saturday, March 3, squaring off with New Hamshire at 2:15 p.m. in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament.
