STONY BROOK, N.Y. –- The "next man up" has been a big part of the Stony Brook football team's mentality during this 2019 season and because of various circumstances, 33 different players have logged at least one start through the first nine games of the season. One of those players is redshirt freshman DB Gregory Young II (Clinton, Md./Suitland), who has embraced the opportunity.

"I'm just happy to do my job in the system and help contribute to wins and that is the goal week in and week out," Young said. "I'm just glad that I can come in and help and it is not a drop off. It doesn't matter if it is Gavin (Heslop), TJ (Morrison) or me, there is not a drop off in production and we are able to go out there and get the same goal which is a win."

Young and the Seawolves (5-4, 2-3 CAA Football) will pursue their goal once again on Saturday when they return home to host No. 21 Towson (5-4, 2-3 CAA Football) at 2 p.m. in Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.

Young, who has played in eight games this season, got the call to start for the first time of his budding career during week three against Wagner.  So far this season he has recorded 22 total tackles, one interception and a pair of pass break ups.

His interception was a huge play in the third quarter in the come-from-behind thrilling victory over No. 5 Villanova on Oct. 26. He picked off a pass from Wildcats' QB Daniel Smith and scampered 14 yards to help set a touchdown that sparked the comeback.

Young attributes the success that he is having early in his career to the veterans on the team that have helped guide him through his redshirt season and up to this point of 2019.

"The success has been the older guys taking me under their wing," Young added. "The guys, Gavin (Heslop), TJ (Morrison), Kareem (Gaulden), Synceir (Malone), basically mentored me and helped me get to the next step."

With the tutelage of those players, Young, along with the support of his family, has allowed him to go after his dream of one day playing in the NFL.

"My family motivates me," Young said. "Before every game I just think about my family. It is why I play. I'm just trying to make them proud and change our situation and maybe make the league."
