Stony Brook Looks to Defend America East Title for Seventh-Straight Year Against UAlbany

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – After knocking off No. 4 UMBC in the tournament semifinals, the No. 1-seeded Stony Brook women's lacrosse team will battle No. 2 UAlbany for the America East Championship this Saturday. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m. at LaValle Stadium and will be streamed on ESPN+.
 
This is the eighth year in a row that the Seawolves have advanced to the conference final, having won the past six. All eight of Stony Brook's matchups in the championship have been against the Great Danes.
 
Scouting UAlbany
  • UAlbany earned the right to play in the America East title game after taking down New Hampshire in the semifinals, 20-16.
  • Madison Conway (6G, 3A) and Sam Tortora (4G, 5A) led the Great Danes with nine points each.
  • Other big point scorers were Kyla Zapolski (3G, 3A) and Hailey Carroll (4G).
  • Goalkeepers Georgia Schneidereith and Erin Leghart split time in the net, tallying eight total saves.
  • In the national rankings, Tortora is 11th in assists per game (2.56) and 13th in assists (41).
  • Conway is fourth in the nation in shot percentage (0.619).
  • As a team, UAlbany is careful with the ball, coming in at No. 4 in turnovers per game (12.47).
  • The Great Danes are also 14th in the country in assists per game (7.59) and 18th in points per game (21.82).
Head Coach Joe Spallina
  • Seawolves' head coach Joe Spallina is in his eighth season with the program, owning a 137-25 overall record at Stony Brook.
  • The engineer of the nation's best turnaround in 2012 and winningest coach in program history after only three seasons, Spallina has guided the Seawolves to a 47-2 record in regular-season America East action and six-consecutive America East titles and NCAA Tournament appearances.
  • Under Spallina, Stony Brook has produced 11 individual IWLCA All-Americans for a grand total of 17 All-America honors, seven Tewaaraton nominees, – including two finalists – six conference championships, six NCAA Tournament second-round berths and two NCAA quarterfinal appearances.
2018 Season
  • Stony Brook is coming off its best season in program history, going 20-1 in 2018. 
  • The Seawolves fell at Boston College in the NCAA Quarterfinal round after winning its sixth-straight America East title on May 6, 2018.
  • The Seawolves won 20 games in a season for the second time in program history after also doing so in 2017.

  • For the eighth-straight year, Stony Brook and UAlbany will be battling for the America East title.
  • The Seawolves have won the crown for the past six years while the Great Danes came out on top in 2012.
  • In the all-time series, Stony Brook leads 18-7 and has won its past 13 matchups.
  • Its last loss to UAlbany came in the conference final game in 2012.
All-Conference Awards
  • Stony Brook came away with three major postseason America East honors while eight total Seawolves were awarded.
  • Ally Kennedy was named the conference's Midfielder of the Year for the second-straight year.
  • Anna Tesoriero was honored as the Goalkeeper of the Year for the third-straight time.
  • Mackenzie Burns was tabbed the Defensive Player of the Year.
  • Along with the trio, Siobhan Rafferty and Taryn Ohlmiller were also placed on the All-Conference First Team.

Kennedy Coming for the Tewaaraton
  • Ally Kennedy was officially named a Tewaaraton Award nominee last Thursday.
  • She is one of 25 to make the nomination cut for the prestigious award given to the best collegiate lacrosse player.
  • Kennedy and teammates Taryn Ohlmiller and Keri McCarthywere all named to the initial watch list back in February.
  • It was Ohlmiller's second time on the list after also being included on the 2018 watch list.
Shots…EVERYBODY
  • Ally Kennedy is first in the nation in shots on goal per game (7.11) and third in shots per game (8.83).
  • Additionally, she is sixth in goals per game (4.00), seventh in goals (68) and 10th in free position goals per game (1.29).
(Goal)Keeping it Real
  • Goalkeeper Anna Tesoriero's goals against average is the third-best in the nation (7.62).
  • The senior has started in all 18 games this season, collecting 110 saves on the year for a .462 save percentage.
  • She is just one save away from recording 500 as a Seawolf.
  • Tesoriero is a three-time America East Goalkeeper of the Year (2017, 18, 19) and was an Inside Lacrosse Third Team All-American last season.
Views From the Top of the Conference
  • Stony Brook secured its seventh consecutive regular season title, defeating New Hampshire 17-5 in Durham, N.H.
  • The Seawolves swept conference regular season action for the fifth consecutive season.
  • The team has been dominant in conference play under Coach Spallina's tenure, going 47-2.
  • The last time the Seawolves dropped a contest to an America East opponent was back in 2014 when Vermont won an 8-7 overtime decision.
  • In the America East tournament, the squad has only lost one game with Spallina at the helm, falling to UAlbany in the championship in 2012 (7-9).
Welcome to the 200 Club
  • With a dominating 14-2 win over Cornell on Mar. 16, head coach Joe Spallina hit the 200-win mark as a head coach.
  • The victory marked his 127th at Stony Brook while winning 73 games at the helm of Adelphi's women's lacrosse team.
Going Streaking
  • Ally Kennedy has scored in all 18 games so far this season, recording at least three goals in 15 of them.
  • Kennedy put in a career-high seven goals against UAlbany in the regular season.
  • Siobhan Rafferty has notched at least one point in every game and has recorded at least one goal in 16 of 18 contests.
  • Against UMBC in the regular season, she scored a career-high five goals.
  • Sara Moeller is on a 10-game point streak and put up a season-high seven points from two goals and five assists at Vermont.
  • Taryn Ohlmiller has scored in all 13 games she has played in, posting a season-high eight points (3G, 5A) in the season opener at Colorado.
  • Sabrina Tabasso has notched at least one point in six-straight games.
In the Record Books
  • Keri McCarthy is the current Stony Brook record-holder in career draw controls (377) and fifth in single-season draw controls (70).
  • Ally Kennedy is fourth in career goals (161), seventh in career points (209), tied for ninth in career ground balls (118), sixth in career draw controls (177), sixth in single-season goals (74), 10th in single-season points (88) and tied for second in single-season draw controls (106).
  • Her seven goals against UAlbany this season is also tied for the eighth most in a single game and her 12 draw controls at Penn State is tied for the third most.
  • Taryn Ohlmiller is eighth in career goals (147), third in career assists (120) and fourth in career points (267).
  • Mackenzie Burns in seventh in career caused turnovers (64) and Haley Dillon is tied for seventh in single-season caused turnovers (28).
The 100
  • The team returns one 100-point scorer from 2018 in Taryn Ohlmiller.
  • As a sophomore, Ohlmiller notched 107 points from 52 goals and 55 assists.
  • She leads the team in assists (29) while ranking second in points (59) and third in goals (30).
Everybody Gets a Goal!
  • Fifteen Stony Brook players scored against Hartford in a 21-4 win.
  • Carlee JanelliShonly Wallace and Nicole Rizzo all scored their first-career goals in a Stony Brook uniform versus the Hawks.
  • Twelve different Seawolves notched goals in a 20-3 takedown of UMass Lowell.
  • Kelsi LoNigroMikayla Dwyer and Gabby Abbadessa each scored for the first time in their Stony Brook careers.
  • As a team, 20 total players have scored at least once this season while 22 have notched at least one point.
Team USA
  • Both Ally Kennedy and Mackenzie Burns have donned the Red, White and Blue for the U.S. Women's National Lacrosse Senior team.
  • Kennedy made her debut for Team USA back in November at the U.S. President's Cup down in Florida.
  • In January, Burns joined Kennedy out west in California for the Spring Premiere.
Built From The Island
  • Out of the 31 players on Stony Brook's roster, 24 hail from Long Island.
  • This is the most in comparison to other DI lacrosse programs.
  • Hofstra is second on the list with 18 athletes from the Island while Binghamton is third with 16.
All-American Selections
  • Ally Kennedy was named an Inside Lacrosse Midseason Division I All-American on Apr. 4, being placed on the Third Team.
  • Four Stony Brook women's lacrosse players were tabbed as Inside Lacrosse Preseason Division I All-Americans, the publication announced heading into the 2019 season.
  • Taryn Ohlmiller and Kennedy were selected to the Second Team while Keri McCarthy and Anna Tesoriero were named to the Honorable Mention squad.
Coast-to-Coast
  • This year, the team features two players from the North American West Coast.
  • Freshman Shonly Wallace hails from Mission, British Columbia while classmate Gabby Abbadessa is from Phoenix, Ariz.
Players of the Week Next Up: NCAAs
A win in the championship final would give Stony Brook an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The NCAA selection show is slated for 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 5th. The first two rounds of the national tournament will take place on May 10 and 12 with the top-eight seeds hosting.
