STONY BROOK, N.Y. – After 15 practices and a pair of live scrimmages during the 2019 camp, the battle for Stony Brook's starting quarterback has been settled. Head football coach
Chuck Priore has named junior
Tyquell Fields (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) as the Seawolves' starting quarterback for the season opener next Thursday, Aug. 29, when Bryant visits Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff (

"I'm very pleased to have the opportunity to name Tyquell the starting quarterback," Priore said. "First and foremost,
Jack Cassidy and Tyquell are good friends and both performed at a high level. It was pretty neat to watch the competition and their development as players and as leaders over the course of the last six months."
Â
"My feelings are that we can win with both guys, but I felt Tyquell seized the opportunity and really elevated his play over the off season and during preseason camp. His athleticism is a game changing element and he can make every throw in our offense. When given the opportunity Tyquell has performed well in games over the last two seasons and I'm excited to see him lead our offense in a full time role," Priore added.
Â
Fields, who edged out fellow junior
Jack Cassidy (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) for the role as starter, enters his fourth year as a student-athlete at Stony Brook. After redshirting in 2016, Fields played in six games in 2017 as a redshirt freshman and logged time in eight games last season as a sophomore.
Â
"It feels great. I've been waiting for this moment for years now," Fields said. "I'm just taking all of this in and enjoying the moment. I'll work hard for this team and lead this team to a championship."
Â
During the 2018 season, Fields completed 17 of 35 passes for 166 yards and threw two touchdowns in a back-up roll to
Joe Carbone. He also rushed for 49 yards and 20 carries last season.
Â
Following the season-opener, Stony Brook travels west to take on FBS foe Utah State out of the Mountain West Conference on Sept. 7 in Logan, Utah.
Â
In addition to the opener against Bryant, the Seawolves have six more home games that include Wagner (Sept. 14) and Fordham (Sept. 21) in non-conference games at LaValle Stadium. The CAA Football home schedule gets underway on Oct. 5 when James Madison visits Long Island for Homecoming. New Hampshire (Oct. 12), Towson (Nov. 9) and UAlbany (Nov. 23) round out the home conference schedule.
