Seawolves Look to Go Two For Two on Opening Weekend

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Fresh off a dramatic opening night win, the Stony Brook women's soccer team will look to make it two wins in two tries in the first weekend of the season when they play host to Manhattan on Sunday afternoon at LaValle Stadium.

The Seawolves came from behind for a 2-1 victory on Thursday night, with junior Chelsie DePonte (Honolulu, Hawaii) scoring both goals, including a dramatic 91st-minute overtime winner, to give Stony Brook the victory.

Seawolves Notes
  • DePonte scored the Seawolves' first goal in the 13th minute to even the night after Northeastern had started the scoring inside of six minutes.
  • It was the junior's first-career, multi-goal game and her second career game-winning goal.
  • Junior Fanny Götesson (Varnamo, Sweden) picked up where she left off last season, dishing an assist on the first goal.
  • Reigning America East Goalkeeper of the Year Sofia Manner (Helsinki, Finland) had eight saves, including three kick saves, to keep Northeastern off the board after the early strike.
  • The Seawolves have now won seven consecutive regular season home matches and 10 of their last 11 regularly scheduled matchups at LaValle Stadium.
The Series
  • The Seawolves have a 4-1-1 record against Manhattan, dating back to 1995.
  • The teams have not met since the 2012 season, a 1-0 decision in favor of the Seawolves. Stony Brook has won the last three meetings by an aggregate score of 6-1.
Scouting Manhattan
  • The Jaspers lost on opening night by a 2-1 final to Hartford in West Hartford, Conn.
  • They scored their lone goal in the third minute on a penalty kick from Arianna Montefusco.
  • Between the posts, Camryn Nici had six saves.
  • Coming off a 3-8-4 campaign a season ago, Manhattan was selected to finish eighth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference poll. The team did not qualify for the league's postseason a year ago.
