STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- With 48 career starts returning to the Stony Brook football team's defensive line, the unit looks to be one of the most experienced not only in the CAA Football, but in the nation.
Â
"We have a lot of fourth and fifth-year guys in our two-deep. That's probably the most I've ever had coaching anywhere and it is showing in camp," Stony Brook defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator
Rob Noel said. "The technique is very polished because they have been doing it a long time. I'm excited to see the development of some of these guys as they enter the last couple years of their careers."
Â
Anchoring the line is a trio of returning starters from the 2018 campaign in senior captain
Sam Kamara (Carteret, N.J./Carteret), junior
Brandon Lopez (Jamaica, N.Y./The Kent School) and sophomore
Casey Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./South Philadelphia). Kamara started all 12 games last season and has 28 career starts under his belt. He recorded 42 total tackles in 2018 that included 9.0 sacks. Lopez started 10 games in 2018 and Williams had eight starts on the line to go with 43 total tackles and 6.0 sacks.
Â
Senior
Keegan Henderson (Merritt Island, Fla./Merritt Island) is slated to be the other starter on the line in 2019 for
Noel, who enters his sixth season as the DL coach and first as the team's defensive run game coordinator. Stony Brook finished 20
th in the nation last year in rushing defense under the guidance of Noel and Seawolves' defensive coordinator
Bobby McIntyre.
Â
"Because we have a lot of experience, these guys have seen a lot," Kamara said. "With that being said, we all know what is going on and we are clicking on all cylinders. In the short time we've been together this camp everybody has been in tune with each other and we are on the right path."
Â
The Seawolves have depth on the line as well in 2019. 17 of the 110 roster spots are occupied by defensive linemen that include graduate transfer
Sean Hammonds Jr. (Louisville, Ky./Ball State), senior
Odean Gilzene (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) and juniors
Peterson Octavien (Naples, Fla./Golden Gate) and
Lorenzo Worrell (Rosedale, N.Y./Christ the King).
Â
"We have a lot of guys that are playing some pretty good football," Noel added. "Sean (Hammonds) has flashed this camp and Pete (Octavien) is a guy that has wanted to push for a bigger role during his career and so far this camp he's really shown that he can contribute."
Â
Redshirt freshman
Makye Smith (Upper Marlboro, Md./Frederick Douglas) and sophomore
Petey Wilks Jr. (Brooklyn, N.Y./Erasmus Hall) also look to add to the depth on the line.
Â
"We've been working hard in the weight room and off the field so when we come out to the field we are loose and strong and we get the job done," Williams said. "We always try to stay together so there is a lot of comradery even with the young guys."
Â
Stony Brook has seven home games in 2019 that get underway on Thursday Aug. 29 against Bryant. The Seawolves also welcome Wagner (Sept. 14) and Fordham (Sept. 21) in non-conference games at LaValle Stadium. The CAA Football home schedule gets underway on Oct. 5 when James Madison visits Long Island for Homecoming. New Hampshire (Oct. 12), Towson (Nov. 9) and UAlbany (Nov. 23) round out the home conference schedule.
