STONY BROOK, N.Y. – In its only matchup with a Top 25 team this season, the Stony Brook women's soccer team will head to Morgantown, W.Va. on Thursday night for a battle with No. 22 West Virginia at 7 p.m. The Seawolves are coming off a homestand split with local rivals, defeating St. John's on Thursday 1-0 in overtime before dropping a tight affair with Hofstra 2-1 in overtime.
Seawolves Notes
- Junior Alyssa Francese (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) has caught fire in front of goal as of late, scoring all three of her season tallies in the last four outings. She leads the team in that category.
- Francese took home America East Offensive Player of the Week honors for her two-goal week against the Red Storm and Pride.
- Classmate Chelsie DePonte (Honolulu, Hawaii) also has a pair of goals on the season, including the overtime winner in the season opener against Northeastern.
- Junior Erin O'Connor (Setauket, N.Y.) has recorded an assist in each of the last two games. She has combined with Francese on both.
- Junior Kimmy Chavkin (Franklin, N.J.) has anchored the Seawolves on the back line, playing all 559 minutes in 2019.
- Goalkeeper Sofia Manner (Helsinki, Finland) has played every minute between the posts, making 27 saves on the year.
- She sits second in the league and inside the Top 50 nationally in the category.
The Series
- This will be the first meeting all-time between the Seawolves and Mountaineers.
- Along with it being the team's first Division I match in the state of West Virginia, it will also be its inaugural match with a Big 12 opponent.
- As far as Top 25 competition is concerned, it is the second game with a ranked opponent in as many seasons. The Seawolves played No. 20 Notre Dame to a second overtime before a 1-0 final.
Scouting the Mountaineers
- The Mountaineers are currently 2-2-1 with their most recent contest ending in a draw at home against Penn State.
- West Virginia sits No. 23 in the latest United Soccer Coaches national rankings. They are third in the Midwest Region rankings behind TCU and Kansas.
- Julianne Vallerand leads the Mountaineers with three goals this season. Five different players have also chipped in a goal for West Virginia.
- Goalkeeper Rylee Foster has allowed eight goals this season, calculating out to a 1.53 goals-against average. She also has a .636 save percentage in five starts.
