STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Motivation. It's what drives you to become better. For Stony Brook football redshirt freshman running back Ty Son Lawton (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis), his motivation was to get onto the field and do what his predecessors were able to do.

"Being able to watch those guys (Donald Liotine and Jordan Gowins) and learn from those guys last year motivates me for this season," Lawton said. "They had 1000-yard seasons and that is what I'm planning on doing as well. "

Lawton, who gained 49 yards on 11 carries in Stony Brook's season-opening win over Bryant on Aug, 29, is on his way to reaching for his goals and hopes to be ready to go this Saturday when he and the Seawolves host Wagner at 6 p.m. in Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium (GET YOUR TICKETS NOW).

"I felt relieved to finally be out on the field," Lawton said on playing in his first collegiate game.  "I'm trying to get back and get ready for this week."

Lawton missed last Saturday's game at Utah State with a foot injury, but is working hard to be on the field this Saturday when Stony Brook takes on his hometown team.

His talent at running back became evident during his time at Curtis High School on Staten Island where he first got noticed by the Stony Brook coaching staff. Lawton rushed for over 2,600 during his seasons on varsity and helped guide Curtis to a 23-1 record that included back-to-back NYC PSAL Championships in 2016 and 2017.

"Stony Brook treated me well on my visit and this was the only visit I took," Lawton said about his recruiting experience.

Lawton felt so comfortable at Stony Brook that he decided to become an early enrollee and join the Seawolves for the spring semester in 2018. That allowed him to practice during the spring and gain valuable experience.

"It was a good experience. I liked coming in early." Lawton said. "I was ahead of my whole class and was the only one that came in early for the spring. I was able to become comfortable with the system and it was great to be able to that experience."

Lawton gained even more knowledge of the Stony Brook system when he took a redshirt season in 2018 and sat behind Liotine and Gowins.

"Last year was a good year of learning," Lawton said. "I still reach out to Jordan (Gowins) and Donnie (Liotine) to give me tips on my game. I feel like I still have a lot to learn."

THE SERIES
This will be the 15th meeting between the two in-state rivals. Wagner leads the series 9-5, but Stony Brook has won each of the last three meetings. The Seawolves earned a 45-9 victory over the Seahawks on Nov. 4, 2017 in LaValle Stadium the last time the teams met.

SNY DEBUT
Stony Brook and SNY have partnered up to broadcast the Seawolves' home games in 2019 that include Wagner, James Madison, New Hampshire, Towson and UAlbany. The broadcast team of Jonny Wincott on play-by-play, NFL veteran Erik Coleman as the analyst and Ariel Epstein on the sideline will handle the call for these four games.

RIDING TEN
After the opening week's victory over Bryant, Stony Brook has now won 10 straight games in Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.

NEW YORK (backfield) STATE OF MIND
The Seawolves have an offensive backfield made up of New Yorkers. The three running backs - Isaiah White (Gordon Heights, N.Y.), Ty Son Lawton (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Seba Nekhet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) - all hail from the Empire State, while QBs Tyquell Fields (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Jack Cassidy (Bohemia, N.Y.) are also New York natives.

YONKERS PIPELINE
Three expected starters for the Seawolves in 2019 all hail from Archbishop Stepinac High School in Yonkers, N.Y., and all played together during their HS careers. Senior captain Gavin Heslop and junior TJ Morrison are slated to be the starting cornerbacks for Stony Brook and have been teammates and friends since the age of eight. Junior Tyquell Fields also donned the Archbishop Stepinac uniform with Heslop and Morrison. True freshman WR Shawn Harris Jr. also comes from Stepinac HS.

CONSTANT THREAT
Grad transfer Jean Constant, a preseason FCS STATS All-American as a kick returner, transferred to Stony Brook after a four-year undergrad career at Bryant where we was named a two-time All-American and returned kicks for touchdowns for the Bulldogs.

WHITE RETURNS TO THE OFFENSE
Senior captain Isaiah White is back on the offensive side of the ball for 2019 after he spent the three years on defense. White carried the ball 62 times for 243 yards as a running back during his true freshman season in 2015. In the opener against Bryant, White, in his first career start against Bryant, scored a pair of rushing touchdowns and gained 54 yards on 13 carries. He added a receiving TD at Utah State.

PICK-SIX PARTY
Senior DB Synceir Malone joined the pick-six in the opening win over Bryant with a 22-yard interception return for a touchdown. Malone's score marked the fifth pick-six for the Seawolves since the second game of the 2018 season. It also marks the seventh defensive touchdown for Stony Brook in the last 12 games.

HOME OPENER
Stony Brook opened the seasons with the first of seven home games in LaValle Stadium with a 35-10 victory over Bryant. The Seawolves are now 10-4 in the home opener under head coach Chuck Priore.

AGAINST THE FCS RANKS
Stony Brook in now 11-23 all-time against FCS ranked opponents with the wins over No. 13 Villanova in week five and No. 11 Delaware in week 10 of 2018. The Seawolves had victories over No. 12 New Hampshire and No. 17 Richmond in 2017. The Seawolves' also posted two ranked wins in 2016. Stony Brook earned a 42-14 win over No. 2 Richmond and a 13-9 season-opening victory against No. 19 North Dakota. Richmond's No. 2 ranking equals the highest ranked opponent to come into Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium (No. 2 Towson on Sept. 28, 2013). The win over Richmond also marked the program's first victory over a top 10 team.

VS. FBS
Last Saturday marked the 12th time Stony Brook faced a FBS opponent on the gridiron. The Seawolves are now 1-10 against FBS teams in the previous meetings. Stony Brook met Toledo to open the season in 2015, but the game was not completed due to weather. Last season, Stony Brook opened the season at Air Force.
