Men's Lacrosse Adds Former MLL All-Star Tommy Kelly to Coaching Staff

Tommy Kelly competes during a Premier Lacrosse League game on July 7, 2019, in Washington.
STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Stony Brook men's lacrosse coaching staff has added another member with a distinguished playing résumé.

Tommy Kelly has joined the Seawolves as a volunteer assistant coach.

Kelly, a Rocky Point native and faceoff specialist, earned a Major Lacrosse League All-Star selection while playing for the Denver Outlaws in 2017. He has played in the league for three seasons and had the MLL's top faceoff percentage in 2018.

Kelly also played in the inaugural Premier Lacrosse League season this past year with the Chaos.

Kelly, along with fellow Stony Brook assistant coach Mike Chanenchuk, are members of Team USA. They are competing this weekend in San Antonio, Texas, beginning with a game against Japan on Saturday.

First-year head coach Anthony Gilardi's staff also includes associate head coach and defensive coordinator J.P. Brazel, who spent the previous eight seasons as an assistant coach at Hofstra.

"I could not be more excited with the addition of Tommy Kelly as our volunteer assistant coach," Gilardi said. "Tommy is one of the premier faceoff players and coaches in the country. To add his knowledge and passion to our staff is a tremendous win for Stony Brook men's lacrosse."

The Seawolves begin formal practices on Jan. 13. They open their first season with Gilardi at the helm on Feb. 11 against St. John's at LaValle Stadium.
