STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Caleb Pearson has found a knack for scoring with the game on the line.
Pearson opened the Stony Brook men's lacrosse team's season by scoring the game winner with eight seconds left in the first overtime period against St. John's. He repeated the feat with 31 seconds remaining in extra time against Brown. And once again, Pearson did it with 30 seconds left in sudden death to lift the Seawolves past Sacred Heart.
"Every one is so special. Even the third one feels just as special as the first one," Pearson said. "I hope it doesn't happen again. I don't want to go to overtime again."
Pearson's three overtime goals are the most in NCAA Division I this season, and the most since John Wagner from Marquette netted four overtime goals in 2018.
For Pearson, the 2020 season has been full of rewarding accomplishments.
The sophomore from Langley, B.C., was named the America East Offensive Player of the Week on Feb. 17 after his game-winner against the Red Storm and his career-high four-goal outing at Fairfield.
Pearson has dramatically upgraded his offensive production compared with his freshman season a year ago.
"Coming in with the new coaches, everyone had a new opportunity," Pearson said. "If you wanted to play attack, you could play attack. I wanted to be an offensive middie, so I took advantage of the opportunity of being able to come to a new spot. And I think I've been doing all right so far."
Pearson leads the Seawolves with 15 goals heading into Saturday's game at Bryant. He credits the coaching transition to his early season success and the success of the team.
"Everyone is buying into the process and the system," he said. "It really shows this year. Everyone is putting their body on the line. The scout guys are doing an unbelievable job in practice to make the No. 1 guys even better.
"Everyone works so hard, and that makes it that much more special to get a victory on a Tuesday night or a Saturday."
