STONY BROOK, N.Y. — A key member of the record-setting 2019-20 Stony Brook women's basketball team is headed to the professional ranks, making history in the process.
Point guard
Kaela Hilaire shared via social media that she has signed with Metropol Baskets Schwabach in the German Bundesliga.
In her lone season with the Seawolves a year ago, Hilaire earned second-team All-America East honors. A graduate transfer from Seton Hall, she tallied her 1,000th collegiate point during last year's regular-season finale against UAlbany.
She averaged 13.3 points and 3.4 rebounds per game and also finished sixth in program history in assists in a season with 144 in 2019-20.
"KK was very instrumental in her single season with our program, helping lead our team to our first-ever America East regular-season championship," coach
Caroline McCombs said. "She was one of the first high school players I watched upon my arrival on Long Island seven years ago. I'm so proud of her for chasing her dreams to play professionally, and am excited for her to take this next step in her basketball journey."
Stony Brook was one win away from earning its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth when the America East tourney was canceled due to COVID-19. The Seawolves nonetheless posted a 28-3 overall record that included a 22-game winning streak, which had been the longest in the nation while active. They were crowned conference regular-season and postseason champions.
Hilaire graduated from Stony Brook last summer with a liberal studies degree.
