STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Sean Chamberlain was destined to attend Stony Brook University.
After his older brother Christian represented the university in the early 1990s, playing lacrosse for longtime coach
John Espey, Chamberlain relished following in his sibling's footsteps.
He was a sought-after recruit by other schools, but Stony Brook always remained atop his list.
"To go to a place where my brother went, along with the financial assistance, it was the perfect fit at the end of the day," Chamberlain said.
Chamberlain played four seasons at attack for the Seawolves before graduating in 2007. He helped lead the program to the America East playoffs each season.
Now, using the lessons he learned from his time as a student-athlete at Stony Brook, Chamberlain has made lacrosse his profession.
Chamberlain currently is in his seventh season as the head coach at Farmingdale State. He's earned numerous honors, including Coach of the Year in 2016. He has led the Rams to the playoffs in every season since he arrived.
"I've always had a close relationship with Farmingdale State," he said. "To be part of something here and share the same vision as [athletic director] Michael Harrington, it was the perfect fit."
Chamberlain also is co-president and founder of Dynamic Sports Management. Founded in 2009, the organization specializes in youth sports events, tournaments, club teams and training.
He partnered with people embedded in the sport to form what has become one the top youth lacrosse organizations worldwide.
"I started doing local leagues, camps and training," he said. "I used the alumni network to form Dynamic Sports."
The organization focuses on serving youth lacrosse players across the country, including players from Westchester, Long Island, Texas and Colorado. It aims to ensure that players are given opportunities to play and showcase their talents in different events and leagues across the country. The aim is to get them recruited at the collegiate level.
Despite the coaching gig and operating a thriving business, Chamberlain maintains a close relationship with his alma mater. Staying involved with Seawolves United, the athletic department's fundraising arm, has always been important to him.
"Stony Brook has provided me with a lot of opportunities," said Chamberlain, who recently was honored with the university alumni association's 40 Under Forty award. "A lot of it has to do with athletics and the experiences that I had. It's something you just don't forget, and you can't abandon it."
Chamberlain regularly attends games as his schedule permits. He has traveled with the football team multiple times, and is in the stands for lacrosse, basketball and several other sports.
"This is the college I went to, and I want to represent it the right way," Chamberlain said. "You never forget where you came from."
