STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Evan Fox slugged his first collegiate homer on Saturday.
And he hit .417 with three RBIs and two runs scored during a four-game weekend series split against Binghamton that preserved the Stony Brook baseball team's stranglehold on first place in America East.
As a result, Fox was recognized on Tuesday as the conference's Rookie of the Week.
The 5-foot-9 Fox, who hails from upstate Ballston Spa, has been the most impactful freshman on the Seawolves in 2021.
He has started all but two of Stony Brook's 35 games and has taken to playing in left field in addition to his customary middle infield positions. That included making another diving catch this weekend.
"It's been a lot of work," Fox said about getting acclimated to the outfield. "It's hard going from fielding balls on the ground all the time to trying to get used to it off the bat in the outfield. But it's been a good transition. They put me there in the fall. I'm starting to get more comfortable with it. And now I feel like I'm getting a lot more comfortable with it. I'm starting to feel good out there."
As for slugging his first homer in Game 2 on Saturday, Fox said: "I knew I had it in me, but I don't go for them ever. I'm more singles, doubles and trying to hit the ball hard on the ground and line drives. But I know if it's middle-in, I can get a hold of it and it could go out. That's what happened."
