Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Warren and Gonzalez Lead Women’s Basketball to Victory in Home Opener

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Led by its backcourt duo of graduate Anastasia Warren and senior Gigi Gonzalez, the Stony Brook women's basketball team cruised to a 69-51 win over the Manhattan Jaspers on Thursday night. It was Stony Brook's first win of the season and it came in the home opener at Island Federal Arena.

Warren finished the game with a season-high 28 points, along with four rebounds, and one assist and Gonzalez followed with a season-high 19 points, six assists, and five rebounds.

Warren exploded in the fourth quarter scoring 13 points in the frame and shooting a perfect 4-of-4 from the field and 3-of-3 from three-point range.

Stony Brook got off to a fast start in the game, backed by Warren's 10 points in the first quarter. Sophomore forward Sherese Pittman was all over the boards as she pulled down a career-best 16 rebounds, the most by a Stony Brook student-athlete since Cheyenne Clark also totaled 16 rebounds against Bucknell on December 29, 2019.

The Seawolves' backcourt duo ended the first half in style with Gonzalez finding Warren in transition for a fast break layup to go up 40-22 at the half.

Stony Brook finished the first half on an 11-0 run over the final 3:42 and an extended 13-2 run over the final 4:20. The Seawolves forced four turnovers in that span and used stifling defense to lead to their buckets on offense.

In the opening stages of the second half, the guards shined again. Gonzalez ran the floor in transition defense and stole a Manhattan pass. The point guard pushed the ball up the floor to find Warren for a three-pointer, which opened the scoring in the second half.

The Seawolves never looked back and maintained their lead, en route to an 18-point victory. The 18-point win was the Seawolves' largest margin of victory since they knocked off Hartford, 95-69, on February 19, 2022.
