Women’s Hoops Falls to ACC Foe Syracuse in 2022-23 Season Opener

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Stony Brook women's basketball team received standout contributions from newcomers graduate guard Daishai Almond and sophomore forward Sherese Pittman, but the Seawolves fell to ACC foe Syracuse, 79-56, inside the JMA Wireless Dome on Monday.  
 
The Seawolves came out with a strong first quarter as they took an early 19-17 lead into the second frame. The Orange rallied in the second quarter and outscored Stony Brook, 22-7, in the stanza to take a 39-26 lead into the halftime break.
 
 
Long Island's team came out battling in the second half as Almond and Pittman continued to lead the way for the Seawolves. Stony Brook put together its highest scoring quarter of the game in the third as it went on to outscore Syracuse, 22-21, in the frame.
 
 
The Orange increased their lead in the fourth and held on to secure their first win of the season. Despite the result, Almond and Pittman each scored in double figures and combined for 28 points in their Stony Brook debuts. Almond poured in a team-high 15 points, while Pittman nearly finished with a double-double as she totaled 13 points and nine rebounds.
 
The New York schools went head-to-head for the fifth time in history. The meeting was the first since the teams met on November 29, 2020, inside Island Federal Arena.
 
STATS AND NOTES
  • Almond finished as the Seawolves' leading scorer in her Stony Brook debut. The guard scored 15 points on 6-of-15 shooting from the field, dished out three assists, and pulled down three rebounds.
  • Pittman was one rebound shy of her first career double-double as she tallied 13 points and nine rebounds in her Seawolves debut. The forward scored a career-high 13 points and pulled down a career-best nine rebounds. Four of Pittman's nine rebounds were of the offensive variety. She shot 5-of-12 from the field and logged 35 minutes of action.
  • Graduate guard Anastasia Warren recorded six points and five rebounds in her 103rd career game.
  • Junior guard Shamarla King made her Stony Brook debut and scored four points.
  • Freshman guard Khalis Whiting, freshman forward Lauren Filien, and freshman forward Delaney Yarborough all made their collegiate debuts in the season opener.
