PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Seawolves and Quakers met for the second time in as many seasons as Penn was able to avenge its loss at Stony Brook from last season with a 73-53 win on Thursday night at The Palestra.
The Quakers took control of the game early in the first quarter en route to their third win of the season. Despite the defeat, Stony Brook graduate forward
Nairimar Vargas-Reyes posted a career-high 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor.
After trailing, 41-26, after the first half, Stony Brook outscored Penn, 20-16, in the third quarter and used an 8-0 run to close out the frame and cut the deficit to 57-46. Vargas-Reyes did a bulk of her scoring in the third quarter for the Seawolves as she tallied eight points in the quarter.
Penn regained control of the game in the fourth quarter as it was able to outscore Stony Brook, 16-7, in the stanza and secure the victory. The Quakers did their damage from behind the arc as they shot 12-of-29 from three-point range. Nearly half of Penn's field goals were of the three-point variety (converted 28 total field goals in the game).
STATS AND NOTES
- Vargas-Reyes was Stony Brook's leading scorer for the second game in a row. For the second-straight game, the forward set a new career-high in points with 19. She shot 7-of-14 from the field, 5-of-6 from the free-throw line, and pulled down seven rebounds (four defensive, three offensive). It was the fourth time this season that she has scored in double figures.
- Sophomore forward Sherese Pittman nearly finished with a double-double. The forward scored 13 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Pittman has scored in double-digits in four consecutive games.
- Graduate guards Anastasia Warren and Daishai Almond each scored six points apiece.
- Senior guard Gigi Gonzalez dished out a team-best four assists and swiped three steals in 27 minutes of play.

The Seawolves are right back on the court on Saturday, December 3, when they head to Lewisburg, Pa. to face Bucknell. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m., and the game will broadcast on ESPN+. Stony Brook and Bucknell go head-to-head for the first time since the Seawolves picked up a 78-73 win over the Bison in double overtime on December 29, 2019, at Island Federal Arena.
