STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook women's basketball team used a dominant performance to conclude its non-conference slate with a 69-59 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday afternoon. The Seawolves were paced by graduate guard
Anastasia Warren, who scored a game-high 24 points, and sophomore forward
Sherese Pittman, who collected her second double-double of the season.
Stony Brook led for nearly the duration of the contest as it held the advantage for 39:02 en route to its sixth win of the season and second in a row. It marked the third time this season that the Seawolves have won back-to-back games, they also won two-straight on November 10 and 14 and November 23 and 24.
Warren set the tone for the Seawolves in the first quarter as she scored 11 of her 24 points in the opening frame. Stony Brook shot 50.0 percent from the floor in the first quarter and controlled a 20-12 lead following the first 10 minutes. The Hawks battled their way back into the game in the second as they outscored the Seawolves, 16-10.
Senior guard
Gigi Gonzalez banked a floater in as the halftime buzzer sounded to give the Seawolves a 30-28 lead at the break. Pittman did a bulk of her damage in the first half as she scored 10 points and pulled down four rebounds before the break.
Stony Brook was able to pull away in the second half behind hot shooting, dominant guard play, and a tenacious effort to rebound the basketball. Warren poured in 13 points in the second half, eight of which came in the fourth quarter.
Graduate guard
Daishai Almond scored all eight of her points in the second half and provided a spark in the fourth quarter by scoring six points in within four possessions for the Seawolves, which gave them a 57-45, lead with 7:47 to play.
Stony Brook controlled the glass as it outrebounded Maryland Eastern Shore, 46-36, over the course of the game. In the second half, the Seawolves pulled down 24 boards to the Hawks' 13, with Pittman dominating the glass, grabbing seven rebounds over the final two quarters.
STATS AND NOTES
- Warren led the team with 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field and had a career-high six three-pointers in the victory. The Georgia native leads the team with five 20-plus point performances this season and is averaging a team-best 16.2 points per game.
- Pittman earned her second double-double of the season today after collecting 15 points and 11 rebounds. The forward is now averaging a team-high 8.0 rebounds per game and has scored in double-digits in eight of the Seawolves' 11 game this season. She also had a career-high four steals and tied a season-best with three blocks.
- The Seawolves' floor general Gigi Gonzalez scored four points, dished out seven assists, and pulled down six rebounds. The seven helpers for Gonzalez tied a season-high from Stony Brook's last game against St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday, December 10.
- Junior forward Ny Toang came off the bench to tally a season-best six rebounds, two assists, and three points in 23 minutes of action.
- Almond scored eight points, grabbed two rebounds, and dished out two assists.
- The 29 three-point attempts by the Seawolves were a new season-high for the squad.
- The Seawolves collected a season-high 33 defensive rebounds.
- Stony Brook's four total blocks were the second-most in a game this season (5 vs. Manhattan on November 10, 2022).
- The squad moves to 2-0 all-time against the Hawks with the victory today.
