FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Stony Brook University women's basketball is set to go head-to-head with VCU on Friday, March 18, at 6 p.m., in Round 1 of the Postseason WNIT. The Seawolves earned an at-large berth into the national postseason tournament and are set to make their third appearance in the event. The meeting is the first in history between the teams and the game will broadcast on ESPN3.
Stony Brook will take part in the WNIT for the first time since the 2014 season when it faced Michigan. The Seawolves' first appearance in the tournament came in 2006 when they met Long Island foe Hofstra in the first round.
The berth in the WNIT marks Stony Brook's sixth appearance in a national postseason tournament during the program's Division I era. The Seawolves have recorded three WNIT appearances, two WBI appearances (2015, 2016), and one NCAA Tournament appearance (2021).
Stony Brook posted a 23-5, 14-4 America East record this season. The Seawolves finished the season tied for the league lead in wins and recorded 20 wins in a season for the eighth time in program history and the third time in the last four years.

The Seawolves earned their third win over a Power Five opponent in program history on November 16, when they went on the road to defeat Big Ten member Rutgers, 53-44. Just over a month later, the Seawolves knocked off Pac-12 member Washington State, 69-62, on December 19, for its second win of a Power Five team this season and fourth in program history.

About the WNIT:
The Postseason Women's National Invitation Tournament began in 1998 with 16 teams playing for a postseason crown. The event has undergone four expansions throughout which its mission has remained the same: To give deserving teams a quality opportunity to play exciting games for a postseason title.
Following the inaugural year, the field doubled to 32 teams and remained that way until 2006 when a renewed commitment was made to schools. The WNIT expanded to a 40-team field to give spots to teams that won their regular-season conference title but did not win their conference tournament and therefore were excluded from the NCAA Tournament.
The WNIT furthered that commitment to conferences in 2007, when it expanded to 48 teams and awarded an automatic berth to each conference. The number of at-large berths remained at 17 until 2010, when the WNIT felt that the level of women's basketball warranted an expansion to the 64-team field.
