STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Stony Brook women's soccer team capitalized on two penalty-kick goals and freshman Ashley Bell's first career tally to take a 3-1 victory over Drexel at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Thursday night.
Stony Brook improved to 3-4-3 in the league and 5-5-5 overall, earning a much-needed three points to improve to seventh in the CAA standings. SBU sits just two points behind UNCW for a top-six CAA Tournament spot after Thursday's action.
How it Happened
The Seawolves began the match by putting the pressure on the Dragons' defense early, tallying four shots in the first 12 minutes of play. Luciana Setteducate was all over the Dragons territory and notched three of SBU's first four shots, but all three were stopped.
Stony Brook would open the scoring in the match this evening when Bell notched her first goal of the season in the 41st minute, making the most of a pass from Graceann Murphy that Bell put in the back-corner of the net. Stony Brook would carry that lead into halftime.
After the break, the Dragons evened the match on a goal from Delaney Lappin in the 46th minute, assisted by Lily Dunbar.
However, Stony Brook then broke the 1-1 draw after the Seawolves earned a penalty from a hand ball inside the box by the Dragons in the 53rd minute. Linn Beck was selected to take the penalty kick and the sophomore cashed in on her fourth goal of the season.
Later in the match, Stony Brook would take a 3-1 lead with an 80th-minute penalty-kick goal from
Kerry Pearson, which was her first goal of the season. The goal provided some much-needed insurance.
