Seawolves Battle Against Fordham, But Fall in Second Half

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook football took a 7-6 lead into the locker room at halftime, but Fordham scored 20 unanswered in the second half to take a 26-7 decision at LaValle Stadium on Saturday.

For the Seawolves, Casey Case finished with 243 yards through the air, tossing one touchdown and one interception. He completed 21-of-34 passes (61.8%) on the day. He tossed his touchdown to redshirt freshman Anthony Johnson, who led SBU with six catches for 87 yards. Redshirt junior Jayden Cook added 51 yards on three catches.
 



On the ground, redshirt junior Roland Dempster totaled 36 yards on 12 carries to lead Stony Brook.

Defensively, Stony Brook earned three sacks in total, with 1.5 coming from redshirt junior Davon Bomar. Bomar totaled 2.0 tackles and four for the game. Graduate student Aidan Kaler came up with 12 tackles, with seven of them solo in the contest. Three other Seawolves – graduate student Chayce Chalmers, redshirt junior Nick Chimienti and redshirt freshman Anthony Ferrelli each recorded eight.

For Fordham, C.J. Montes finished 20-of-33 passing for 171 yards, completing passes to seven different receivers, led by Garrett Cody with 55 yards. Julius Loughridge ran for 154 yards on 24 carries, including a 49-yard run in the first quarter.

Stony Brook held a 243-171 advantage in passing yards, but Fordham out-gained the Seawolves on the ground, 215-27.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Fordham scored on its first two drives, but Stony Brook limited both scoring drives to field goals to stay within a score, trailing 6-0 after the first quarter.
  • A 10-play, 70-yard drive culminated with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Johnson to give Stony Brook the lead, 7-6.
  • Both teams traded fourth-down stops in the second quarter, with Stony Brook stopping a quarterback scramble to stall a Fordham drive.
  • Fordham ran a 13-play, 85-yard drive to take a 12-7 lead at the end of the third.
  • The Rams took advantage of two fumbles to extend the lead, scoring on both via a two-yard rush and a 19-yard carry.

GAME NOTES
  • Stony Brook recorded at least three sacks for the third time this year.
  • The defense held an opponent without a first-half touchdown for the first time since Oct. 1, 2022 against William & Mary.
  • SBU held Fordham to 171 yards passing, the Rams' fewest since Week 1 of 2021.
  • Johnson's 29-yard touchdown catch marked the fifth consecutive game he has caught a pass of at least 20 yards.
  • Kaler's 12 tackles were the fifth time in his career he has totaled at least 10 tackles and marked his ninth consecutive game with at least five.
  • Redshirt sophomore Jalen Hoyle registered the first blocked kick of his career in the third quarter. It was also Stony Brook's first blocked kick of the season.
  • Bomar's sack in the third quarter marked the first of his career.
  • Case completed at least 20 passes for the third time this season and completed more than 60% of his passes for the third time this year.

Stony Brook will play its annual Homecoming game on Saturday, Oct. 21 against New Hampshire at LaValle Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. on FloFootball. UNH leads the overall series 7-3 and Stony Brook is 2-3 at home.
