Football Drops Homecoming Contest to New Hampshire

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook football got a pair of 100-yard receiving performances, but dropped a 45-14 decision to New Hampshire in its annual homecoming game at LaValle Stadium on Saturday.

Graduate student Casey Case finished 18-for-29 in the passing game for 255 yards and a touchdown, doing so without an interception. Redshirt freshman Jayce Freeman grabbed two catches for 115 yards and a touchdown, while classmate Anthony Johnson added nine grabs for 101 yards to lead the way in the pass-catching department for Stony Brook.
 



Redshirt junior Jadon Turner paced the Seawolves rushing attack with 32 yards on five carries, averaging 6.4 yards per carry. Redshirt junior Roland Dempster added 24 yards and one touchdown on the afternoon.

On defense, redshirt senior De'Aundre Cruz led Stony Brook with 10 tackles, including nine solo stops. Redshirt freshman Willensky Nicolas added eight tackles, including seven solo stops, while graduate student Aidan Kaler also totaled eight tackles. Redshirt sophomore Rodney Faulk picked up 1.5 tackles for loss and 1.0 sack, totaling three tackles.

For New Hampshire, Max Brosmer completed 28-of-40 passes for 335 yards and four touchdowns, each to different receivers. Dylan Laube led UNH with 42 rushing yards, and totaled 149 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns on the game. Laube, Caleb Burke, Joey Corcoran, and Colby Ramshaw all caught a touchdown pass, with Corcoran leading the way with 76 receiving yards.

All told, New Hampshire held the total offense advantage, 470-363.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Stony Brook entered the red zone on the first possession, but the field goal was blocked.
  • New Hampshire capitalized on a 54-yard catch and run for a touchdown. The Seawolves responded to tie things 7-7 with a five-play, 59-yard touchdown drive. UNH closed the first quarter's scoring by going 36 yards on 12 plays and tacking on a field goal.
  • The Wildcats extended in the second quarter to finish a 10-play, 75-yard drive, and grabbed a 24-7 lead with a 23-yard touchdown.
  • Freeman's 98-yard reception cut into the deficit at 21-14, but a fake field goal was ran in for a touchdown to give New Hampshire a 31-14 halftime advantage.
  • A 57-yard touchdown pass and a five-yard touchdown run for New Hampshire closed the game's scoring.
GAME NOTES
  • Saturday marked the first game with multiple SBU receivers hauling in at least 100 receiving yards since Donavin Washington and Adrian Coxson did so on Oct. 25, 2014 against New Hampshire.
  • Freeman's 98-yard touchdown reception was the longest pass play in Stony Brook history. The touchdown reception was also the second-longest offensive play in Stony Brook history, only behind Ty Son Lawton's 99-yard touchdown run on Oct. 16, 2021.
  • Johnson hauled in a reception of at least 20 yards for the sixth consecutive game.
  • Freeman became Stony Brook's third 100-yard receiver this season, joining Johnson and Jayden Cook, while Johnson became the first receiver with multiple 100-yard games in a season since Nick Anderson had three in 2019.
  • The Stony Brook offense prolonged drives, converting on 41.7 percent of third-down attempts.
  • Cruz set his career high in tackles, and is the second Stony Brook defender to record double-digit stops in a game this season, joining fellow linebacker Kaler.
  • His nine solo tackles are also the most for a Stony Brook defender this year.
  • Saturday's game was played in front of a crowd of 7,739 fans, the 20th-largest in LaValle Stadium history.
