STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook swimming and diving and head coach
Mark Anderson has announced two signees in the program's 2024 signing class on Thursday.
The program will add swimmer Brenna Mowrey and diver Natalia Chornomidza to next year's roster, after both signed their National Letters of Intent during the early signing period. Both student-athletes will enroll at the university and compete for the program beginning with the 2024-25 season.
ON MOWREY:
Hailing from Galena, Ohio, Mowrey has primarily competed in the 100 backstroke and 100 fly, with personal best times of 57.36 for the former and 57.07 for the latter. She has also swam in 50-yard, 200-yard and 400-yard events, covering all possible strokes in her high school career. At Olentangy Berlin High School, she has picked up All-Ohio honors and has qualified for the state tournament three times. She is ranked 47th in the state of Ohio according to swimcloud.com.
Mowrey also competes for Hydra Aquatics and is an athlete at Future FX Crossfit. She is a member of National Honor Society at her high school.
Anderson on Mowrey: "Brenna is a swimmer that excites us as a program. She brings a great personality with a lot of drive and commitment. Her potential as a swimmer has only just begun to scratch the surface and we can't wait to have her on campus next fall!"
ON CHORNOMIDZA:
Staying on the Island to compete in collegiate swimming, Mowrey has top scores of 312.67, a Lindenhurst High School record, in 6 dives, and 508.80 in 11 dives. A native of Lindenhurst, N.Y., Chornomidza was ranked as a top 15 diver in the state in 2022. Recently, she finished first in 1M diving (6 dives) in the NYPHSAA Section XI League 3 Championship with a score of 287.85, and followed that up with a fourth-place finish in 1M (11 dives) with a 469.90 finish.
She has been named to All-State and All-County Teams, while also being named the county's most promising diver in 2020 and team MVP at Lindenhurst High School in 2021-22. Academically, Chornomidza is an AP Scholar with Honors.
Anderson on Chornomidza: "Natalia is a Long Island athlete who over the years has progressed greatly in diving. She is very strong academically and her diving ability will be a great addition to our team as we continue to build in the CAA. We can't wait to have her on our team next fall!"
Stony Brook continues its 2023-24 schedule with a dual meet against Siena on Nov. 18 at University Pool, and will honor its 2024 senior class before the meet.
