RICHMOND, Va. – Before the No. 5-seed Seawolves head to Towson on Thursday for their CAA Championship first round matchup against No. 4-seed Charleston, the postseason accolades have begun as three student-athletes earned All-Conference honors as announced by the league office on Wednesday morning.
Senior Torri Henry was tabbed as the CAA Setter of the Year and captured First Team honors after leading the CAA in assists per set (10.67), becoming the first student-athlete to earn the award. Fellow senior Leoni Kunz was recognized on the Second Team after finishing with a career-best 301 kills. Freshman Ava Jackson was named to the All-Rookie team after tallying 142 kills.
"I'm excited for Torri, Leo and Ava to be recognized for their well-deserved contributions to our team this season," said head coach
Kristin Belzung. "Their individual accomplishments are a testament to their teammates putting them in great situations as much as their dedication to getting better each day. I'm so happy for them each to be honored."
The native of Missouri, Henry had a career year this season for the Seawolves. She finished with a new career-high in numerous offensive categories such as assists (1,119), kills (59), service aces (42), and total attempts (182). Defensively, she set career-marks in digs (292) and tallied 30.0 blocks. Her 10.76 assists per set sit as the third highest in single-season program history.
On Oct. 14, she became the fifth student-athlete in program history to record 3,000 assists for their career. Henry also became the first member of the Seawolves' volleyball program this season to claim CAA Offensive Player of the Week after averaging 12.44 assists per set, facilitating a Stony Brook attack that hit .309. She totaled 112 assists, 31 digs and eight service aces in the three victories for Stony Brook during the week of Oct. 9.
Kunz set the pace for the Seawolves' attack this season by finishing with a career-high 301 kills, which was good for 10th best in the CAA and second-highest on the team. The native of Knoxville also finished with 213 digs, 62.0 blocks, 21 assists and 16 service aces over her 104 sets that she appeared in this season.
The senior finished her regular season with eight double-doubles this season, including a 24-kill outing vs Northeastern on Sept. 17 and a 25-dig performance vs UNCW on Nov. 4. She ended the season by capturing 10 or more kills in five of her last six matches.
Jackson becomes the second player in program history (Kali Moore, 2022) to earn All-Rookie honors. The outside hitter shined this season with her 142 kills in the 67 sets that she appeared in. She also tallied 49 digs, 21 blocks, and 17 aces to help the Seawolves in multiple phases.
The freshman was also selected as CAA Rookie of the Week on two different occasions this season, as the freshman was first selected after helping Stony Brook to a weekend sweep over William & Mary Oct. 28 and 29 by contributing 22 kills, five blocks, four digs and three service aces. Two weeks later, the Kentucky native captured Rookie of the Week after averaging 3.0 kills per set on a .388 hitting percentage, as Stony Brook won its fifth and sixth consecutive matchups in a weekend sweep over Long Island rival Hofstra.
Saturday's victory over Hofstra earned the Seawolves their first victory over the Pride since 1999, a playoff berth, and helped Jackson to her second CAA Rookie of the Week honor.
The Seawolves will head to Towson for the CAA Championships beginning next Thursday. Stony Brook earned the No. 5 seed and will face No. 4 Charleston on Thursday at 4 p.m.
