Two Program Records Highlight First Day of ECAC Championship for Swimming & Diving

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – Two new Stony Brook swimming & diving program records were set in the 200 free stylerelay and the 50 freestyle to cap an impressive first day at the ECAC Championships from the Nassau County Aquatic Center on Friday.
 
The 200 freestyle relay team of freshman Jaelynn Taylor, sophomore Alanna DePinto, sophomore Michelle Vu and freshman Sylvia Walker finished with a combined time of 1:34.72 to set a program-best mark. Walker then set the record in the 50 freestyle, touching the wall in 23.58.
 
Stony Brook jump-started its strong day in Nassau County in the prelims, where nine swimmers and all three divers qualified for the evening finals. Senior Sara DiStefano finished first overall in 1-meter diving in the prelims (251.30).
 
All told, the Seawolves stacked up 13 top-15 finishes in the finals during Friday's opening day, helping Stony Brook to 417.50 points and a 2nd-place standing heading into day two. This included eight different top-seven results across five events.
 
Columbia leads the overall championship total with 698 points.
 
HIGHLIGHTS 
  • The record-setting team of Taylor, DePinto, Vu and Walker finished second overall in the 200 freestyle relay.
  • Sara Baxter, Aili Talcott, Ashley Chui and Mary Kate Conway grabbed ninth in the 200 freestyle relay at 1:37.56.
  • Walker's record-setting time was good for 4th in the 50 freestyle. Vu grabbed ninth (24.04) while DePinto tied for 15th (24.44).
  • Conway finished 11th in the 500 freestyle finals with a time of 5:04.97.
  • Stony Brook picked up a pair of top-six finishes in the 400 medley relay. Taylor, DePinto, Vu and Walker teamed up for a third-place finish with a time of 3:51.72 while Baxter, Talcott, Chui and Conway grabbed sixth with a 3:54.70 combined time.
  • In the 200 IM finals, Talcott earned seventh (2:09.44) while Chui took ninth (2:07.58), the best possible finish in group B.
  • The Seawolves took the top two spots in the 1-meter diving finals, as sophomore Jocelyn Lichwick totaled a six-dive score of 242.45 and Sara DiStefano finished at 237.55.
  • Sophomore Mikayla Lavery finished seventh with 182.90 in the 1-meter finals, marking three of the top seven spots for Stony Brook in Friday's diving competition.

The Seawolves return to the pool on Saturday, Dec. 2 for day two of the ECAC Championship, with prelims set to begin at 9 a.m. followed by finals competition at 6 p.m.
