Seawolves Take First Place in Three Events on Saturday at ECAC Championships

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – Stony Brook swimming & diving continued its impressive form at the ECAC Championships, taking 11 top-10 finishes and first in a trio of finals on Saturday to remain in second in the competition heading into Sunday's final day at the Nassau County Aquatic Center.
 
The Seawolves gained 376 points on the day to total 793.5 for the competition. Columbia remains in the overall lead, totaling 1,289 through two days.
 
Stony Brook's first-place finishes in the evening session were courtesy of freshman Ashley Chui who won the 100 fly finals at 55.53, Walker who finished first in the 200-yard freestyle finals at 1:50.27, and senior Sara DiStefano who scored a total of 237.45 in 3-meter diving. Stony Brook was one of just two schools with competitors finishing in first during Saturday's finals.
 
The Seawolves got things going in the morning prelims, where Sophomore Michelle Vu won the 100-yard butterfly with a qualifying time of 55.45. Two others in Chui (55.78, third) and Walker (57.25, sixth) each finished top six during the event. Walker's time of 1:52.30 was also good for first in the 200-yard freestyle prelims. In addition to her finals victory, DiStefano won the 3-meter diving prelims with a 233.40 total in six dives.  
 
DiStefano along with diving consultant Jan Pisano were named the Diver of the Meet and the Diving Coach of the Meet on Saturday.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sara Baxter, Alanna DePinto, Vu and Chui took third in the 200-yard medley relay finals, finishing at 1:45.13 and improving their time 2.87 seconds from the morning prelims.
  • Lily DeBellis, Aili Talcott, Olivia Polucha and Jaelynn Taylor finished 12th in the 200-yard medley at 1:49.22.
  • Talcott grabbed 10th in the 400-yard IM finals, touching the wall in 4:37.92.
  • In addition to Chui's top finish, Stony Brook totaled four of the top 13 spots in the 100-yard fly finals, as Vu took fourth (56.13), Walker took seventh (57.05) and Polucha took 13th (58.64).
  • Mary Kate Conway gave Stony Brook two top-five finishes in the 200-yard freestyle, with a 1:52.33 finals result.
  • DePinto placed seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke finals (1:06.29).
  • Baxter was Stony Brook's top finisher in the 100-yard breaststroke, coming in 11th at 58.59.
  • DePinto, Chui, Walker and Conway earned second place in the 800-yard freestyle relay, finishing in 7:36.00.
  • Jocelyn Lichwick also placed third in the 3-meter dives with a 214.10 score, giving SBU two of the top three spots in diving competition.
