STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The No. 5 Stony Brook women's lacrosse team (2-0) earned its second consecutive win at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium, defeating No. 21 Yale (2-1), 13-7, on Saturday.
The Seawolves got off to a hot start, scoring the first three goals of the contest. Junior midfielder
Ellie Masera captured the first goal of the game off an assist from senior midfielder
Erin MacQuarrie within the first minute of the game.
Senior attacker
Morgan Mitchell and sophomore midfielder
Alexandra Fusco each added a goal behind Masera to give Stony Brook a 3-0 with 11:44 left to play in the first quarter. The Bulldogs would not stay silent for long as they added two goals in the first to trail the Seawolves 4-2 heading into the quarter break.
With 14:16 remaining in the second quarter, senior attacker
Kailyn Hart found the back of the cage off a helper from junior midfielder
Jaden Hampel to spark a 4-0 run for Stony Brook. Hart would find the back of the net two more times throughout the run, recording her first hat trick of the season.
The Seawolves' offense picked up right where they left off, scoring the first three goals of the third quarter. Stony Brook outscored Yale, 5-3, in the second half to ultimately secure the 13-7 victory.
The squad was paced by Masera and Hart who both recorded three goals in the contest. Hampel and
Morgan Mitchell followed behind tallying a pair of goals each. Senior midfielder
Charlotte Verhulst, MacQuarrie and Fusco all registered one goal apiece.
STATS AND NOTES
- Hart recorded her first hat trick of the season and dished out two assists, totaling a team-high five points in the contest. The attacker also tallied a career-high two caused turnovers.
- Masera also found the back of the cage three times and added her first helper of the season. With the three goals, Masera now extends her goal scoring streak to 19 consecutive games.
- Hampel and Morgan Mitchell both recorded a pair of goals and an assist on the day. This is the first time in her career that Mitchell has recorded at least one goal in the first two games of the season.
- Verhulst had one of the best defensive games of her career, tallying a career-high and team-high four caused turnovers.
- Senior defender Ella Whitehouse held down the back line for the Seawolves, recording a career-high three caused turnovers.
- The 15 caused turnovers are the most by Stony Brook since it recorded 15 at Binghamton on April 19, 2022.
- The Seawolves defense held the Bulldogs to only seven goals, the least amount of goals Yale has scored since tallying five against Penn on February 29, 2020.
