TOWSON, Md. – The Stony Brook women's basketball team (18-13, 11-7 CAA) put forth a valiant effort but was topped by Northeastern (19-11, 13-5 CAA), 85-68, in the CAA Tournament Quarterfinals.
The Seawolves had four student-athletes score in double figures and were paced by graduate guard
Daishai Almond who scored a team-high 16 points and junior guard
Shamarla King who recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Stony Brook took a brief lead with 4:23 to play in the third quarter when senior guard
Gigi Gonzalez converted a driving layup to put the Seawolves out in front, 50-49. Sophomore guard
Erin Turral extended the lead to three, 53-49, with 3:37 to play when she dropped in a layup. Turral went for a career-high tying 11 points as she provided a spark for the Seawolves off the bench.
Northeastern and Stony Brook traded baskets down the stretch of the third quarter and the Huskies took a 60-58 lead into the fourth quarter. Northeastern went on to outscore Stony Brook, 25-10, in the fourth quarter on its way to an 85-68 victory.
STATS AND NOTES
- Almond scored a game-high 16 points on 7-of-19 shooting. In addition, she swiped three steals, dished out three assists, and pulled down two rebounds. It was the 14th time this season that she scored in double figures, and she has done so in five out of the Seawolves' last six games.
- King recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The 11 rebounds were the second-most that she recorded in a game this season. It was the 13th time this season that she scored in double-digits.
- Graduate guard Anastasia Warren scored 11 points on 4-of-12 shooting and went 3-of-9 from three-point range.
- Turral scored a career-high tying 11 points as she shot 4-of-12 shooting in 19 minutes or play off the bench.
- Gonzalez dished out six assists in 29 minutes of play. It was the 11th time this season that she registered six or more assists in a game.
- Stony Brook posted a 1-1 record in its first-ever CAA Tournament.
