King Scores Career-High 23 Points; Seawolves Fall at Towson on Thursday

TOWSON, Md. – Junior guard Shamarla King fueled the Stony Brook (17-11, 11-6 CAA) offense with a career-high 23-point performance, but despite her efforts the Seawolves fell at Towson (18-10, 12-5 CAA), 76-67, at SECU Arena on Thursday night.

The Tigers jumped out to an early eight-point advantage as they took a 19-11 lead into the second quarter of play. Towson's first quarter performance was paced by an efficient 52.9 percent shooting from the floor over the first 10 minutes of play.

Stony Brook bounced back in the second quarter as it outscored Towson, 18-16, and trailed 35-29 going into the halftime break. Graduate guard Anastasia Warren scored eight of her 12 points in the first half of play as she led the Seawolves in scoring at the break.

In the second quarter, Warren and graduate guard Daishai Almond led a 7-0 run, the Seawolves' largest run of the game, which cut the Towson lead from 10 points (21-11) to three (21-18) with 7:46 to play in the frame. Warren knocked down a jumper and then a three-ball before Almond capped the scoring spurt with a jumper of her own.

The Seawolves and Tigers traded blows in the second half as Stony Brook cut Towson's lead to as little as two points, 43-41, with 5:18 to play in the third quarter. The Tigers responded by going on a 6-0 run to pull away once again.

Stony Brook continued to fight but could not overcome Towson's advantage as the Tigers outscored the Seawolves, 41-38, in the second half on their way to the 76-67 victory.

King did the bulk of her damage in the second half for Stony Brook as she scored 19 of her 23 points over the final 20 minutes. The guard shot 7-of-12 from the field in the second half and knocked down 3-of-4 from three-point range.
